✨ The Transformative Power of Dance Therapy with Sarah_G Miller MS, BC-DMT, LLPC ✨ This week, we had an inspiring reminder of the impact our work can have on young lives. During a recent group session, a few of our kids shared with our dance therapist, Sarah_G Miller MS, BC-DMT, LLPC, that they’d been struggling to fall asleep. But instead of facing this challenge alone, they used a progressive relaxation technique that Ms. Sarah taught them just two weeks ago—and it worked! This is what dance therapy is all about. It goes beyond self-expression. It’s about equipping kids with real-life coping skills, teaching them how to trust their abilities, and helping them process and manage life’s daily stresses. Through Ms. Sarah’s guidance, these kids are not just moving to music but learning to find calm, build resilience, and nurture confidence in themselves. Ms. Sarah’s work is a powerful example of the lasting impact therapeutic support can have. Our goal at Cultivating Futures is to give every child these valuable tools for a healthier, more resilient life. Thank you, Ms. Sarah, for your commitment and care! Let’s keep building safe, supportive spaces where our kids can thrive. 🌟💪 #DanceTherapy #YouthEmpowerment #MentalHealthAwareness #ResilienceBuilding #CultivatingFutures

October is SIDS Awareness Month: Let’s Talk About the Data in Kent County, MI Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a heartbreaking reality, and raising awareness is key to preventing these tragedies. The numbers reveal both areas of concern and opportunity for action. In Kent County, the infant mortality rate in recent years has ranged from 5.3 to 6.2 deaths per 1,000 live births, close to Michigan’s average of about 6.1 per 1,000. However, SIDS continues to be a significant contributor to these rates. Statewide in Michigan, 3.2 infant deaths per 10,000 births were attributed to SIDS in 2022, a rate that aligns with the national average of approximately 3.4 per 10,000. Nationally, more than 3,300 sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUIDs) occur each year, including those caused by SIDS, accidental suffocation, and other unknown reasons. While the numbers in Kent County are on par with state and national trends, disparities remain. Black infants, for example, are disproportionately affected by SIDS in both Michigan and across the U.S., highlighting the need for targeted interventions and education campaigns focused on safe sleep practices and healthcare access. Support & Resources: Families facing SIDS need emotional, financial, and peer support. Organizations like the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and Safe Sleep for Baby offer guidance on reducing SIDS risks. Locally, the Healthy Kent Coalition and First Steps Kent provide support and education for families in the Grand Rapids area. We encourage everyone to take part in this conversation—educate yourself on safe sleep guidelines, support parents, and advocate for accessible healthcare solutions to reduce these losses in our community. Together, we can help Kent County families thrive and prevent further tragedies. #SupportingFamilies #ReducingDisparities #PreventingSIDS #CultivatingFutures

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month: A Call to Support Families in Kent County and Beyond At Cultivating Futures, we recognize that behind every statistic is a story of love, loss, and resilience. October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and it is a time for reflection and support for families navigating the most profound grief. In Kent County, recent reports reveal that infant mortality rates remain a significant concern, with local outcomes reflecting disparities that are often more severe than state and national averages. Michigan's infant mortality rate sits at 6.6 deaths per 1,000 live births, higher than the national average of 5.5 per 1,000 live births. These numbers highlight the urgent need for accessible healthcare, targeted maternal support, and comprehensive community services for vulnerable populations, including young and marginalized mothers. Our efforts at Cultivating Futures include addressing critical gaps in maternal and infant care through partnerships, advocacy, and tailored support programs like doula and lactation services. We believe in fostering spaces where every mother—whether young, teen, or marginalized—can thrive, gain confidence, and access the resources they need to overcome these challenges. If you or someone you know is struggling with the loss of a pregnancy or an infant, you are not alone. Support is available through local and national resources, including: * Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Perinatal Bereavement Program (Grand Rapids) * Quantum Mental Health and Wellness Center: (616) 626-1900; website: quantummhwc.com * Postpartum Support International: Helpline 1-800-944-4773 Together, let’s build a future where fewer families have to endure such heartbreak.
