Today, Dec. 17, the UK government launched a consultation that will provide an exception for #AI companies to train their systems on copyright-protected works. We vehemently disagree with this proposal. Any UK government action that degrades copyright creates a legal environment that discourages UK and U.S. creators and rightsholders from participating and investing in creative endeavors within the UK. On December 10, the Copyright Alliance submitted a letter urging the UK government to continue championing the creative industry and rejecting attempts to introduce AI exceptions in copyright law. The letter urges the government to keep three principles in mind: (1) creators and copyright owners should not be subsidizing AI technologies; (2) creators and copyright owners’ ability to create and license works for AI usage should not be undermined; and (3) creators and copyright owners must continue to have the right, choice, and ability to protect and enforce their rights. On December 12, the Financial Times published an article about the letter, titled “U.S. Media Groups Warn UK Over AI Content-Scraping Rules,” which states, “The [Copyright Alliance] urged the UK government to reject attempts to create AI-related exceptions that undermine copyright protections. The letter, signed by…chief executive Keith Kupferschmid, said it ‘vehemently opposes so-called opt-out provisions, which subvert the fundamental nature of copyright and that would be unworkable in practice.’” https://lnkd.in/dQGhpn9P
