Decarbonizing businesses is critical to effectively mitigate climate change. SMEs, who contribute significantly to the US economy and collectively have a substantial carbon footprint, find it challenging to decarbonize due to costs. Tax credits are a critical way to make decarbonization more cost-effective. Yet, over 50% of existing tax credits & incentives go unclaimed yearly in the US. Many of the SMEs that qualify are either unaware or lack the resources to claim these. We want to help close this gap. Join Ephi Banaynal dela Cruz on December 2nd, at 11am PST, for a live webinar in collaboration with Scrubbed, where you’ll: 💡 Hear straight from the US Department of Treasury’s IRA Office Sr Advisor, Rachel McCleery, about recently released tax incentive rules and upcoming changes. 💡 Learn how to navigate new green tax incentives, including the latest Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (45X) updates 💡 Get key strategies for streamlining compliance and maximizing tax credits Register here https://lnkd.in/gUDEUuTf #TaxCredits #Accounting #Sustainability #BusinessGrowth #AIinFinance

Leadership shifts bring policy changes. Yet, with red states benefitting the most from the economic development & job creation the IRA has spurred, unlikely allies—including oil companies— are urging the new administration to maintain core provisions. https://wix.to/BCqsjel #IRA #TaxCredits

It's a shocking statistic. Financial flows of $7 trillion annually go to economic activities and subsidies that destroy nature versus only around $200 billion to finance nature protection and recovery. How do we shift the balance and make finance part of the solution to the biodiversity crisis? With the UN Biodiversity Conference in Cali kicking off, we penned a short piece calling for policy makers to take the steps urgently needed to shift the balance. There's a lot that needs to happen, but from financial regulators and institutions around the world we call for three things: First, international recognition that the long-term, widespread and often irreversible risks of the biodiversity crisis are not being priced by the financial system. This can cause a buildup of systemic risks and lead to financial instability. This is firmly within the mandate of Central Banks. We call for global action by central banks to put in place measures manage this risk. Second, at the individual corporate and financial institution level, firms must manage and disclose their nature-related financial risks, alongside their climate risks. From Mark Carney - the more we invest with foresight, the less we regret with hindsight. Thirdly, similar to transition finance for net zero, financial institutions engage with clients and investees to explore opportunities to support their transition towards more nature-positive activities and reflect this in transition plans. Securing financial resilience and nature and climate goals are synonymous; and all are essential for securing economic growth and sustainable development globally. We have all the evidence we need; it's time for action. Sending best wishes to all those in Cali right now working on behalf of all of us to put in place the guardrails, coalitions and mechanisms to align finance with global biodiversity and climate goals.

Where Indigenous Peoples have strong land rights, deforestation rates are lower and biodiversity is better preserved. But increased mining to meet the needs of the energy transition is putting communities and their climate solutions at risk. Galina Angarova, executive director for the SIRGE Coalition, says it’s more important than ever to ensure Indigenous communities have a central voice in decisions affecting their lands and livelihoods given that over half of mining projects for transition minerals occur on or near their territories. In this #UNGAxFord video, Galina shares her vision for a just energy transition where Indigenous peoples are at the forefront, exercising their rights to the fullest extent. #UNGA

A good tool improves the way you work; a great tool improves the way you think. Today, the ENCORE tool, a leading UN-backed tool for screening risks to natural capital frequently referenced by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), Science Based Targets Network and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), launched a major upgrade. The new enhancements are underpinned by the latest scientific research and driven by feedback from ENCORE users who are leading the way in assessing nature-related risks. The update includes seven key improvements: 🌲 Expansion of the previous list of 92 ‘production processes’ to 271 ‘economic activities 🌴 The list of ecosystem services is now better aligned with the categorisation proposed by the UN’s SEEA 🌿 Improved clarity on how economic activities can impact nature 🌾 Natural capital is now separated into different ecosystem types aligned with the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology 2.0 🌵 All data on impacts and dependencies of economic activities have been updated based on the latest scientific research 🌳Improved methodology of the materiality ratings 🌱 New information has been added on key value chain links covering two tiers of suppliers and two tiers of consumers Our Head, Usher, E., commented on the new release: "ENCORE provides an unparalleled resource for financial institutions to evaluate their environmental exposure, offering critical insights into the nature-related impacts and dependencies within their portfolios. This new update follows the demand of our membership and makes ENCORE even more useful as a screening tool, empowering financial institutions to integrate nature considerations into their strategic decision-making, fostering resilience and sustainability." The updates were made as part of the Horizon Europe project “Strengthening Understanding and Strategies of Business to Assess and Integrate Nature" (SUSTAIN) Users can find out more about the updates to support their transition between old and new versions of the knowledge base by downloading the following resources: https://lnkd.in/eXiynaFU Liesel Van Ast Jessica Smith Gabriela Hermosilla Liang Qian Verena Kraus Matt Jones Neville Ash Melissa de Kock Sharon Brooks Sebastian Bekker Frida Arriaga Alena Cierna Natalie Taylor Roger Ingle Aarty Iyengar Niki Mardas Marianne Haahr Lisa Petrovic Leanne Bell Nichola Rowlands-Smith Kate Rampersad Jolene Tan

🆒 In March this year, a new opinion on nature risk and directors’ duties in the UK said it loud and clear - nature risks are no different to any other business risks and directors have to manage them accordingly. ❓So, what does this new opinion mean for directors’ in practice❓ 👇 In our interview with Eniye A. Igbanibo, Jenni Ramos and I answer this question and many more. 👇See my comments for links to the opinion and other resources. #biodiversityrisk #biodiversityliability #naturerisk #directorsduties #CCLI #TNFD Pollination Commonwealth Climate and Law Initiative (CCLI) Thea Philip Laura Waterford Veda FitzSimons Olivia Back https://lnkd.in/eHkCpr54

Today we publish analysis that shows nature degradation will wipe billions of pounds off of UK GDP and threaten financial resilience. Intuitively we know that the continued degradation of nature harms our collective prosperity, but this is the first time it has been quantified. Full report, synopsis, press release and supportive quotes here: https://lnkd.in/efncmJej Over the last year, I have had the absolute privilege of working with Dr Nicola Ranger of the Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford Institute, Tom Oliver from the University of Reading, and Joanna Wolstenholme from UNEP-WCMC and the team at National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) on this analysis. The results are beyond what we imagined, and they’re already happening. The degradation to UK's nature may have a greater impact on our GDP than the Global Financial Crisis in the coming decade, with a 3% hit by the late 2020s alone. Our exposure to international nature-related risks could also cost us 6% off of GDP. And the risk of an antimicrobial resistance-driven pandemic increases, may result in a loss off our GDP greater than that experienced during COVID-19. Preliminary evidence also suggest in this report that our banks are vulnerable. If there is one message to take from this report it is this: nature cannot wait. We have to swiftly transition our economic and financial system to one that values and invests in our natural environment. A huge thanks to Rhian-Mari Thomas OBE, Carlos Martín Tornero, Martin Booth, Neha Dutt and David Craig for their input, and all those who shared supportive quotes and fed into the research. And to the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and European Climate Foundation for their generous support. I look forward to putting the recommendations into action, and working together on next steps.

Wow, way to go, everyone! This is a huge win for the rights & voice of rivers 🐟 👨🏽⚖️ 👩🏽⚖️ 🌎
Earth Law Center (ELC) is thrilled to announce that a court in Peru has ruled that the Marañon River is a subject of rights. This landmark decision also appoints Indigenous communities as the river’s guardians, defenders, and representatives. This is the first river in Peru to be declared as having rights! The Marañon River is a magnificent free-flowing river that runs for 1,600 miles from the snowy peaks of the Peruvian Andes into the heart of the Amazon. For years, ELC and International Rivers, alongside many incredible partners in #Peru and beyond, have supported the Kukama Women's Federation, the case’s plaintiff, to protect this river and its communities from constant oil spills from the Norperuvian oil pipeline. In addition to giving rights and a voice to the river (through guardianship), the Mixed Court of the City of #Nauta ordered the Regional Government of #Loreto and the pipeline operator, Petroperu, to take specific measures to address the oil spills and help restore the health of the #Marañon. The landmark decision codifies a series of specific #rights for the river, including the right to exist, to flow, to exercise essential ecosystem functions, to be restored, to representation, and many others. Meanwhile, “Guardians of the Marañón River” will act on behalf of the River and its interests, having a seat at the table and being able to file legal and administrative actions and inform legislative, administrative, and executive decisions that could affect the Marañon River, directly or indirectly. The river will have a formal voice! “This historic decision is crucial for Peru and the international community that has closely followed the struggle of the Kukama people,” said Javier Ruiz, ELC Expert in Environmental Policy and Climate Change. “This groundbreaking decision vindicates the rights and culture of the Amazonian populations in Peru." While many deserve congratulations, foremost we want to highlight the Kukama Women's Federation (full name: Federation of Indigenous Kukama Kukamiria Women of the Marañón River). These frontline #guardians represent 28 Indigenous communities and have dedicated their lives to defending the ecosystems of which they are a part. We are honored to have played a part in their victory and to have provided legal expertise, including with a trip to Iquitos, Peru. This is just the beginning of a legal revolution to put Nature into the heart of the legal system. Congratulations to all!
