Conservation Rangers Operations Worldwide

One morning, our instructors asked the Rangers to use what they had to camouflage themselves in 10 minutes. Having absolutely no nets or special equipment, the Rangers made do. Yes, there are several mistakes of course, but please keep in mind they received minimal or no training at all in regard, and the goal was to check the average level of awareness of the environment and to see creativity and improvisation skills. As you know, C.R.O.W. is mostly oriented to short term solutions in Conservation, such as empowering the Rangers with professional training and equipment to prevent further losses of biodiversity, but since some of our Rangers have a background as Biologists, Researchers or Conservationists, sometimes we assign them different tasks. In the last few weeks our spanish biologist and researcher Giovanni Alférez has been deployed to Pakistan for a delicate mission: sensitizing people about the Environment in Punjab, and specifically in the Lahore area, on the Environment. We chose Giovanni because of his humbleness and communication skills, as we have witnessed in the past how the arrogant attitude of foreign "experts" can result in total disregard of their advices. Giovanni has first merged with local population, talking to farmers and workers to understand the challenges they face everyday and to study solutions which could have a positive impact on the environment of such a complex Country. Did you know... that you can be a C.R.O.W. Ranger without attending our classes? Yes: if you believe you know enough about all the subjects covered during our Ranger Courses, you can attempt to pass the final exam straight... at NO cost. You have to be physically in Italy or the US during the last day of training and the test takes a full day. We hope this proves without any doubt our commitment to the cause and integrity. The vast majority of the Rangers doesn't have any military background, and we feel that's not even required unless they part of an APU (Anti-Poaching Unit). The fifth and last pillar of our Plan of Instruction is our Ranger Medical Protocol. The RMP is a mix of remote and tactical medicine focused on our deployment areas, mostly the African bush and jungle. More than using Tourniquets and Emergency bandages, the part of human-wildlife "unwanted interactions" is what the Rangers need the most: a training that can't really be found anywhere, so our instructors had to create it almost 20 years ago. The tactical medicine approach is specific for small APUs, usually no more than 4 or 5 Rangers, with limited or no medical support at all, while the remote medicine lessons includes tropical, environmental diseases, a lot of animal behavior to prevent accidents and envenomation emergency treatments.
