Senator Blumenthal Announces Federal Grant for COMPASS Youth Collaborative COMPASS Youth Collaborative was honored to host Senator Richard Blumenthal and Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam at a press conference today. Senator Blumenthal announced the award of a $198,000 Department of Justice, Office of Victims of Crimes Grant to COMPASS. The funds will be used to provide basic needs for youth who are victims of community violence. In her remarks, COMPASS CEO Jacquelyn Santiago Nazario said, “This grant will allow COMPASS to provide youth with the basic needs to begin the healing process, taking victims of community violence from trauma to trust to transformation. “

This week, COMPASS CEO Jacquelyn Santiago Nazario and Director of Crisis and Hospital Response Larry Johnson presented at the Violence Reduction Center Symposium on Cognitive Behavior Interventions for Violence Prevention at the University of Maryland. Jackie and Larry shared how our team uses Cognitive Behavior Theory to move youth from trauma to trusting relationships as participants on two panels at the symposium.

COMPASS was honored to host Senator Murphy at our Annual Meeting this morning. COMPASS Hospital Violence Intervention Program partners, Hartford Healthcare, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, St Francis Hospital Trinity Health of New England, and the UConn Department of Family Medicine discussed the importance of hospital violence intervention programs and the difference they make in the lives of victims of community violence. COMPASS was proud to stand with Mayor Arunan Arulampalam today as he announced the establishment of the Office of Violence Prevention and introduced Chavon Campbell, who will head the office. We applaud the mayor for this groundbreaking initiative. Hartford is one of the first cities to create an Office of Gun Violence Prevention. All of us are looking forward to working with Chavon to build a city where our youth feel safe, live peacefully, and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

COMPASS proudly announces the promotion of Larry “Love” Johnson to Director of Hospital and Crisis Response. Larry joined COMPASS in 2022 as Crisis Manager. His professionalism has made COMPASS’s Hospital Violence Intervention Program a model in this community. Larry is an active member of The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (HAVI), serving on their racial equity task force and the Reimagining Public Safety task force. Larry, a Hartford Native, is building a community of healing, working with St Francis Hospital, Hartford Healthcare, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, and UConn Department of Family Medicine. Larry has dedicated his life to helping the youth in our community break the cycle of violence and heal their trauma. Congratulations Larry.
