190 amazing hackers, 12 hours of coding, and countless great projects. That’s how our weekend looked like here at Code for Cause. It was truly a pleasure to come together with the team over at Bay Hacks and join forces to launch a great event with ~$47,000 in prizes. Saturday’s Code for Cause Track was to create a volunteer event management system for Youth4Good, Non-profit. We got a lot of really strong submissions and as usual, the winners get a $100 cash prize along with the opportunity to launch their project with support from us and Youth4Good. Last but not least, big thanks to our sponsors, and of course everybody who pulled up. None of this would have been possible without you. Now if any of this sounds interesting to you, you’re in luck because in the coming months, we’ll be partnering with ExpertiseNPO for our next Code for Cause Track at the one and only Juniper Networks Aspiration Dome. In the meantime, if you want to build a real project from the comfort of your own home, tune in to our first ever Code for Cause Bounty that’s live on our website right now. Win $100, earn a sweet resumé addition, and get the opportunity to implement your project with financial literacy organization Finnywise, all without the hassle of an in-person event. (Don’t forget you always get volunteer hours whether you win or not!) Learn more and submit your projects at: https://lnkd.in/gyKVCcY7. As usual, keep watching for more big updates. Stay safe, stay happy, and stay coding! 💜

Things have been busy here at Code for Cause the last few weeks. Here's yet another key partnership we made: We've partnered with ExpertiseNPO to offer a Code for Cause Track at their ExpertiseHacks hackathon this fall at Juniper Networks Aspiration Dome in Sunnyvale! The Code for Cause Track will give hackathon attendees the opportunity to compete to create the best solution for a nonprofit (soon to be announced). Besides creating a great project that helps a nonprofit in need, hackers will also be able to get service hours for their time hacking, and the best team will get a pretty generous prize! Here's a little bit more about ExpertiseHacks: "Expertise Hacks, hosted by ExpertiseNPO, is thrilled to announce that we’re hosting our annual hackathon this fall at Juniper Aspiration Dome, with free entry, lunch and dinner, and countless workshops throughout the day filled with guest speakers from large companies like Apple and Cisco. Open to ALL skill levels, even if you are a beginner, and with over $45,000 in prizes, ExpertiseHacks is the perfect opportunity to explore your hacking skills, network with others, and even get into contact with several CEOs and successful engineers who will be visiting. For any further inquiries, refer to the contact info below, thank you!" As we promised, more big news! For our first ever Code for Cause Bounty, we’ve partnered with Finnywise, a nonprofit dedicated to financial literacy education. As hackers, your task is to build a game (of any type) in which you need to answer financial literacy educational questions to progress/gain points. If you have any experience with game development of any sort, this is a great time to showcase your skills, and if it’s something you’ve been thinking of getting into, this bounty is the perfect opportunity to get started (and maybe even win $$$ and a great resumé addition along the way!). Now we don’t want to spoil it all for you, so be sure to check out https://lnkd.in/gyKVCcY7 to get the full project guide and get started. Remember you have until September 6th and be sure to send any questions or concerns our way. Happy hacking!

Over the last year, we’ve organized our own in-person hackathons, connected local hackathons with our Code for Cause track, reached over 500 hackers, and facilitated the creation of close to a dozen real, impactful projects along the way. But a couple months back, we thought—why stop there? If we truly want to revolutionize hackathons, we need to reach as many people as possible. That’s why we launched Bounties. Bounties are Code for Cause tracks right from the comfort of your own home. You get the same great projects, same opportunities to work with a nonprofit to ship, and the same cash prize, with none of the crowd, none of the mess, and none of the unshowered CS majors crowded into one hall. Just log on to your computer, check out the project guide, build a project, and hit submit once you’re done. Tap in at https://lnkd.in/gPM-acMm. Keep an eye out for new bounties, drop us a follow, and as usual, keep your eyes out for big news. Stay safe, stay happy, and stay hacking! 💜

On Monday, our team had the opportunity to present our ideas to Danielle Strachman, founder of 1517 Fund, at The Institute. Apart from being all the way on the 59th floor of Salesforce Tower, 900 feet above the ground in a beautiful office with an even more amazing view, it was truly inspiring to talk to somebody successful who so strongly believes and lives the same ideas as us. We’re excited to announce that our efforts were recognized with the 1517 Fund’s $1,000 Medici Grant (https://lnkd.in/g2WbrB8A), along with invaluable support and mentorship from the team at 1517. This is a massive step forward for us and it’s truly an honor to get to work with such a forward-thinking and innovative fund. Looking ahead, we’re more committed than ever to expanding our impact and bringing more tech-driven solutions to the communities that need them most. Thank you to Danielle and the 1517 Fund for believing in our vision. As for you guys, keep your eyes out for further updates and posts (hint hint this means big news is dropping soon) and until then, stay safe and stay hacking!

ATTENTION NONPROFITS!!! Are you looking to build software solutions to speed up your processes, but just don’t have the resources to make it happen? Code for Cause can help. We are a community of over 500 students with a mission to use our technology skills to help local nonprofits. We’ve built solutions for over 10 nonprofits so far. What can we make? Well, we made a drive resource management platform that helped WeCommunity replace their antiquated spreadsheet processes and scale from raising around $1000 per drive to over $5000 per drive. We made an app for International Youth Tobacco Control to help youth everywhere get over their unhealthy tobacco addictions. Essentially, we can build anything. Reach out and let us know what your problem is and we’ll make a solution. Unlike other organizations that might offer a one-time build of your solution, we have numerous teams that approach your problem differently, competing to see who can build the best solution for you. This way, you can rest assured that the solution you’re receiving is the best for you. So, if you or anyone you know has a nonprofit, reach out to Mithil Patil or Atharv Deshmukh and let us know what problems you’re having and we’ll get to work on making some solutions!

Code for Cause reposted this
Had an incredible time judging and leading a workshop at the recent hackathon! It was inspiring to see so many innovative projects and ideas from talented participants. A big thank you to the Code for Cause team, Ohlone College, and IHS Hack Club for organizing such a fantastic event. Looking forward to seeing more innovation from these bright minds in the future!
We wanted to recap the 12 hours of awesomeness that we helped organize at Ohlone Hacks yesterday. It’s truly a pleasure to come together with like-minded people from Ohlone College, Associated Students of Ohlone College, and the IHS Hack Club to put together an amazing event. Big shoutout to all of our amazing sponsors without whom none of this would have been possible, and an even bigger shoutout to all of you who pulled up to spend the day hacking. Yesterday we witnessed over 80 hackers writing over 20,000 lines of code and presenting 30 unique and innovative projects. Close to a third of those were projects in our first-ever Code for Cause track (if you want to know what a Code for Cause Track is, visit our website at https://codeforcause.dev). These participants created an app to be used by the global nonprofit International Youth Tobacco Control, to help smokers quit. After a tough round of judging some super impressive projects, we’re pumped to announce our first-place winner Alexander Bonev, who not only received the usual prize but also an opportunity to actually implement his app in partnership with IYTC. Congrats again to Alex, and as for IYTC, it was an absolute pleasure working with you guys and we can’t wait to achieve even bigger things together in the future! Now if all this seemed fun or interesting in any capacity, make sure you check us out next Saturday at MountainHacks. We’ll be running a similar Code for Cause track with a completely new project, this time in partnership with Global Youth Security. As always, if you want Code for Cause at your hackathon or if your non-profit wants to partner with us to build fully functional tech, don’t hesitate to hit us up. Until then, stay safe and stay hacking!

Code for Cause is teaming up with MountainHacks to offer a Code for Cause Track at their hackathon tomorrow! As we promised, we’ve been working with hackathons across the Bay Area on teaming them up with nonprofits and providing hackers with the opportunity to use their tech skills to create projects to help solve those nonprofits’ needs. MountainHacks will be hosting over 100 participants tomorrow, April 20th, at Mountain House High School for the entire day. Over 14 hours, hackers will be building projects to solve problems all across the community, and we are pleased to provide them with even more ideas and the opportunity to solve specific problems for a nonprofit in their community. Unfortunately, signups are now closed, but for those of you who are attending the hackathon, we look forward to seeing you there, and good luck on all your projects! As always, we are going to keep doing everything we can to provide youth with opportunities to solve real problems and create real impact. Be sure to follow our Instagram @codeforc4use or this LinkedIn page to get updates as soon as we announce more opportunities!
