About us

Code.org is a non-profit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science. Our vision is that every student in every school has the opportunity to learn how to code. We believe computer science and computer programming should be part of the core curriculum in education, alongside other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, such as biology, physics, chemistry and algebra.

Updates

  • As the year comes to a close, the Code.org team is taking time to reset, recharge, and reflect. Our offices will be closed for the next two weeks. Thank you to our incredible community of educators, students, and supporters for helping us spark creativity, curiosity, and innovation in classrooms worldwide. We’ll be back in January, ready to continue building a future where every student has the opportunity to learn computer science. Until then, we wish you all a joyful and restful holiday season!

  • This year, 29 states officially recognized #CSEdWeek, reaffirming their commitment to preparing students for the future with computer science education. 🎉 Together, we’ve taken a step toward expanding opportunities for all learners—and this is just the beginning. Let’s keep the momentum going as we build a future shaped by creativity, innovation, and tech skills. #CSForAll #HourOfCode

We succeeded! The U.S. House of Representatives AI Task Force report has a chapter on AI in Education! You'd think this wouldn't be that big a deal, but early Senate forums on AI didn't include education as a topic and even the recent presidential election didn't have much in terms of education policy. There is also so much to cover per AI that legislators can view K-12 education as too removed from immediate concerns. I was fortunate to be asked to testify to the task force and am pleased with the results. See pages 87-110 for the education and workforce section. (Yeah, I never expected K-12 education to have its own chapter!) Key education-related messages: - Responsible AI adoption in America requires AI literacy. I added the responsible part. - K–12 educators need resources to promote AI literacy. - AI literacy includes understanding how AI works, using it responsibly, recognizing its social and ethical impacts, and understanding the benefits and how to mitigate the risks. - Schools and universities need guidance, such as in procuring AI tools wisely. - There is still not enough access and participation in STEM subjects, especially CS education, which contributes to AI literacy, and US students are lagging behind other nations in subjects like mathematics. Thank you, Representatives Jay Obernolte (R-CA) and Ted Lieu (D-CA) for leading the task force. Thank you to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Leader Hon. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) for their bipartisan efforts to improve our nation's AI standing. Thank you to all the players working to raise awareness of AI in education issues, such as Erin Mote, Karl Rectanus, and the members of the EDSAFE AI Alliance and Della Cronin, James Brown, and Bose Public Affairs Group. Thank you to my long-time colleague Allyson Knox of Microsoft. Thank you to Lane Dilg and Anna Makanju of OpenAI for making a place for education issues in much larger AI conversations. There are so many advocating for AI in education at the federal level, like Richard Culatta of ISTE, Julia Fallon of SETDA, Keith Krueger of Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), Sal Khan of Khan Academy, and Stacey Pelika of the National Education Association. Now if we can just pass some K-12 AI in education bills! #TeachAI, #AIliteracy

  • Students are more empowered to engage in popular AI discussions when they understand the technical side of its ethical and societal impacts.” AI is everywhere – from the tools we use to the decisions shaping society. Computer science classrooms offer the best arena for students to understand the technical side of AI. Ready to shape the future of CS education? It's my favorite time of year at Code.org — Hour of Code week is a celebration of creativity, possibility, and the power of computer science to transform lives. Seeing students take their first steps in coding reminds me why we do what we do: to inspire every learner to realize their potential.

We’re so excited to announce the launch of Code.org in Farsi, to inspire the next generation of Iranian innovators. While Code.org has brought computer science to hundreds of millions of students globally, this is the first time our courses are available in Farsi. Iranian culture has a proud legacy in math, and science—even the word “algorithm” comes from the Iranian mathematician Al-Khwarizmi. Code.org in Farsi is a project by Iranians, for Iranians, to support children—not tied to any politics or governments. And we need your help! Help us reach ONE MILLION Farsi-speaking students, to give them the confidence and creativity that comes from learning computer science. Anybody can learn, at Code.org!
