On Friday November 8th, a team of CODAC staff presented at the East Coast Symposium on Addictive Disorders. Dan Barden (Chief Clinical Officer), Nicole Huggett (Sr. Director of Population Health), and Dr. Larry Oñate (Best Practices and Innovation Adviser) shared information with other substance use treatment professionals about the advantages of integrated care in identifying and treating long-term effects of nonfatal overdoses. Through this work, CODAC is able to develop and share best practices in treatment for individuals experiencing substance use disorders not only locally, but nationally. Of particular interest is the research presented on secondary physical health results ("sequalae") in the months and years following a non-fatal overdose ("NFO"). Overdose can have long-lasting impacts on the brain, heart, lungs, extremities, kidneys and liver. We've included a few slides that outline the neurocognitive impacts of non-fatal overdose. After reading these, you may better understand the special needs of people who are in recovery from non-fatal overdose and who are, concurrently, trying to stop using drugs, and maintain housing, jobs and relationships. Fortunately, CODAC is here to help with wrap around physical, mental, emotional and practical supports to help prevent overdose and recover from overdose. By being educated on these neurocognitive impacts, we can also treat individuals in recovery with more compassion and support.
