We're shining a spotlight on Lisa D. Iulo, Professor of Architecture, Director of the Hamer Center for Community Design, and core faculty of the Cocoziello Institute at Penn State. Lisa is leading groundbreaking research at the intersection of sustainable design and community planning. Lisa's innovative work focuses on developing sustainable architectural solutions that promise to transform urban and rural environments. These efforts are not only enhancing the resilience and livability of communities but also addressing critical challenges such as climate change and resource management. Lisa is also leading an interdisciplinary team that received one of the Cocoziello Institute's inaugural seed grants. The project, titled “Designing Scalable and Adaptable Off-Grid Communities in Remote U.S. Areas: Implementing Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems,” aims to create flexible models for off-grid real estate development using advanced energy technologies and efficient building designs to assist remote communities. Alongside Rahman Azari, Seth Blumsack, Gregory S. Pavlak, Sepideh Korsavi, and David Kaneda, the teams goal is to map potential U.S. regions for off-grid energy solutions and provide practical living options that can inform broader real estate initiatives. As the director of the Penn State Cocoziello Institute of Real Estate Innovation I had the incredible opportunity to attend the recent NAIOP Nearshoring / Onshoring Summit in Scottsdale. The discussions with industry and government leaders were enlightening, focusing on the opportunities, challenges, and the impact of globalization on nearshoring and onshoring strategies. Here are some key takeaways: ⭐️Globalization’s Uneven Impact: Only 25 countries have seen trade double or more since 1980, while 89 countries have seen trade stay the same or decrease. ⭐️Shifting Supply Chains: There has been a “once in a lifetime” shift of global supply chains, with up to 35% of supply chains moving or considering moving in the last three years (up from 1-2%) ⭐️Policy-Driven Sourcing: Geopolitical and industrial policies are now the biggest factors in sourcing decisions, rather than market forces like labor and logistics costs. ⭐️Mexico’s Strategic Advantage: Mexico is emerging as a major beneficiary of nearshoring, particularly in the automotive, aerospace, medical, and electronics industries.
