New USA TODAY analysis uses Climate Impact Lab county-level temperature projections to assess how annual warming and extreme heat are expected to change from 2020 to 2040. Like most climate projections, this data shows the nation warming over the next two decades. But the analysis also highlights the potential for cooler regions of the U.S. to experience a significant increase in average annual temperatures. Meanwhile, hotter regions are expected to see the biggest increase in days above 90 degrees. “We’re already experiencing an increase in warming and extreme heat across the country,” says Kelly McCusker, PhD, a climate scientist at the Climate Impact Lab. “I think a lot about how that will worsen … and how that heat affects people unequally.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gx9WZZdK

Ten of EPIC’s pre-doctoral fellows will be taking on new academic opportunities this fall. Over the past two years, the fellows have worked closely with EPIC-affiliated faculty and staff to produce valuable research and develop new skills. The highly competitive fellowship provides young researchers who have completed their bachelor’s degrees the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a full-time work environment under the guidance of EPIC-affiliated faculty and researchers. This year’s departing class—including Kate Champion, Ruozhou Du, Rebecca Frost, Sara Gerstner, Aliya Jabbar, Richard Lu, Matthew Neils and David Xu —are pursuing advanced degrees in economics and sustainable development this fall. Each will leave with the strong support network of professors, postdoctoral scholars, and colleagues who helped advance their research skills, knowledge base and career paths. Using data from the Human Climate Horizons platform by Human Development Report Office - United Nations Development Programme and Climate Impact Lab, Our World in Data presents sobering estimates on future temperature-related deaths from the effects of #ClimateChange. Top-line finding 🔍 Climate change will drive very unequal impacts, with fewer deaths at higher latitudes but increased heatwave deaths across the tropics. It’s only mid-June, and huge swaths of the country are already experiencing — or bracing for — major #HeatWaves. More than 70 million Americans are under extreme heat alerts, and temperatures in parts of the West have been above 100 degrees. The Midwest and Northeast are the next regions headed into the oven. During the winter months, we often hear about cold weather and snowstorms playing havoc with retail sales or other economic activity, but there’s growing evidence that summer heat waves take a big economic toll too — and that their impact is growing as the climate warms. On a recent really hot day, workers were fixing masonry on the roof of Amir Jina’s building. “And the head contractor said, ‘During the hotter parts of the day, I’m just not going to send out people to work,'” he said. Jina, who’s an assistant professor of Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago and a founding member of the Climate Impact Lab, said the contractor was worried about the health effects on the workers — and the potential for costly errors amid the heat.
