Our mission is to reduce the energy burden of low-income households through access to discounted clean energy.
About us
As a nonprofit Green Bank, our mission is to reduce energy costs for low-income households in Maryland by facilitating access to the benefits of community solar power. We aim to make the solar marketplace more inclusive by: 1| Offering attractive financial products to solar developers who offer discounted community solar rates to low- to moderate- income households; 2| Developing urban, infill community solar projects located in lower-wealth communities in Baltimore, and 3| Advocating for clean energy policies that benefit lower-income and disadvantaged communities. We believe that all households should have access to the benefits of solar power. Our vision is that all Marylanders, regardless of level of wealth or income, will have equitable access to the social, economic, and environmental benefits of clean energy through discounted solar electricity, shared ownership of solar projects, and job participation.

Thank you to Cari A. Harris, MS, PMP and the organizers of the inaugural Greater Baltimore Climate Summit! It was our honor to be a part of the Strategies for Equitable and Sustainable Investment in Baltimore panel. What a great start to what we hope is an annual discussion to align, and activate us to collaborate as we work to meet common climate goals for communities in Baltimore. #Baltimore #climate #solar #equity #climatejustice #communitysolar

We are excited to announce that Climate Access Fund has secured $200,000 to advance community solar efforts in Western Maryland! In partnership with grassroots advocates, public agencies, nonprofit entities, and anchor institutions, CAF submitted a successful collaborative application to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Energizing Rural Communities (ERC) Prize Phase 2 Challenge. CAF has committed this funding, along with a 2023 Phase 1 ERC prize award of $100,000, to expanding low-income access to community solar in Western Maryland. Thank you so much to our partners for your support and collaboration. #solar #communitysolar #usdepartmentofenergy #climate #energyjustice #cleanenergy

Green banks are often the difference in making clean energy projects a reality, particularly in areas that suffer from environmental injustices. @us_greenbanks is helping us do more to help communities who benefit the most from clean energy investments. The Climate Access Fund is a proud member of the newly-launched US Green Bank 50 (GB50). We are excited and honored to continue collaborating with green banks across the country to accelerate the growth of the green economy alongside the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. #greenbanks #solarfinance #communitysolar #climatejustice

Gov. Wes Moore signed one of the most comprehensive Executive Orders on climate in Maryland's history. This order requires every state agency to submit a Climate Implementation Plan, prioritizing environmental and economic justice. It also directs new policies to reduce building emissions, establish a framework for 100% clean energy by 2035, and prioritize clean transportation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are proud to have had our CEO, Stephen Morel, at this historic signing together with Maryland’s green banks! Maryland Clean Energy Center, Coalition for Green Capital, Climate Access Fund

The Johns Hopkins University Hub featured Solar4Us @ Henderson-Hopkins and our partnership with the Henderson-Hopkins school. Check out the article, and learn more about our vision and the impact of our work. From the article: "I can't think of a more appropriate place to be to be able to sign this important piece of this important executive order. [Henderson-Hopkins is] not waiting. They're acting. And Solar4Us reminds us that climate action is about much more than just avoiding disaster. ... It's also about what are we doing to unleash opportunities." - Gov. Yesterday in East Baltimore, Gov. Wes Moore signed a comprehensive Executive Order and put into action an ambitious and necessary plan to ensure Maryland's environmental sustainability for future generations. Henderson-Hopkins was a fitting location for this milestone, with Solar4Us @ Henderson-Hopkins, CAF's LMI community solar project, currently under construction on the school's rooftop. Before the signing, Henderson-Hopkins students shared their climate concerns and suggestions for change with Governor Moore, including highlighting the positive impact Solar4Us @ H-H will have on both their community and environment. CAF CEO Lynn Heller also gave remarks about the vision for Solar4Us community solar projects and its alignment with the Governor's vision to accelerate an inclusive green economy that benefits all, with no community "left behind." We are so proud and grateful to have been a part of such a historic moment! Thank you to Meghan Conklin for her leadership in coordinating this event in partnership with the Climate Access Fund and Peter Kannam, Annie Weber and the Henderson-Hopkins team. #solar #communitysolar #LMIcommunitysolar #ghg #greeneconomy #climatejustice #environmentalequity #hendersonhopkins
Climate action is about more than avoiding disaster – it’s about growing opportunity. That's why I signed one of the most comprehensive Executive Orders on climate of any governor in Maryland history. It calls on every state agency to submit a Climate Implementation Plan, and ensures that the State of Maryland keeps environmental justice and economic justice top of mind in all of our climate work. It also directs Maryland Department of the Environment to propose new policies to reduce building emissions, Maryland Energy Administration to establish a framework to achieve 100 percent clean energy by 2035, and Maryland Department of Transportation to help us reduce greenhouse gas emissions by prioritizing clean transportation.

CAF is working with Neighborhood Sun and Kimberly Armstrong to ensure as many low-income households as possible receive a meaningful discount on their electricity bill through our community solar demonstration project, Solar4Us @ Henderson-Hopkins. We are so excited and grateful to be working with you both! Neighborhood Sun is excited to announce our partnership with The Climate Access Fund and Elmer A. Henderson as we unite forces to bring clean energy and cost savings to the low-income community members of Baltimore-based Henderson-Hopkins and its nearby neighbors. Low- and moderate-income (LMI) subscribers will benefit from a 25% discount on the community solar credits generated by the school's rooftop system once construction is completed, and the panels will cover 100% of the school's electricity needs.
