  • 🟢 The 2024 Global Cruise Industry Environmental Technologies and Practices Report shows continued progress by the cruise sector in advancing its environmental and sustainability agenda, including investments in ships and technologies for the uptake of transitional and alternative fuels: 🛳️ 19 ships are using LNG for primary propulsion — LNG has virtually zero sulfur emissions and particulate emissions, reduces NOx emissions by approximately 85% and achieves up to a 20% reduction in GHG emissions. 🍃 71 ships have Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems — SCR technology reduces particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions, thus helping ships to meet IMO Tier III classification standards for nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx). 🔌 147 ships are able to connect to Onshore Power Supply (OPS) at 35 ports worldwide that have a cruise berth with OPS. 🌊 The majority of CLIA member cruise ships sailing today utilize advanced wastewater treatment systems (AWTS) and perform better than shoreside treatment plants in some coastal cities. 🚰 The majority of CLIA members produce their own fresh water onboard their ships, with 267 ships able to do so — of which 172, nearly 60% of the fleet, are capable of producing enough water to match their total consumption. 🟢 Learn more about how cruise lines are continuing to reduce their emissions at sea and at berth in pursuit of net zero emissions by 2050 ▶ https://lnkd.in/e37skDkM 🛳 #WeARECruise

Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs at MSC Group

Well…I have had an exciting week to say the least…I suppose that is no surprise to anyone who is part of my network or follows this profile. First of all, I really cannot properly express just how grateful I truly am for the flood of positive and supportive messages I have received since this announcement was made yesterday about me returning to CLIA as the next President and CEO. Although leaving a job you love is never an easy thing to do, it was made much easier yesterday by how this announcement was both communicated and received. Second, I am very excited for the opportunity to take on this new role on behalf of the Cruise industry, starting in February. Lastly, I owe enormous gratitude to the Aponte Family for the amazing opportunity they gave me to establish the MSC Group’s Maritime Policy & Government Affairs function, and then to lead it for the last 7-1/2 years. I have learned so very much from both the experiences that came with this job and from the incredible honor to work for one of the greatest entrepreneurs the world will ever see. I have genuinely enjoyed it more than I can say, and I expect the final six weeks to be as fun and challenging as the first six (and all in between) have been.

📣 CLIA is excited to announce the appointment of Bud Darr as President and Chief Executive Officer effective February 3, 2025. Darr succeeds Kelly Craighead, who, earlier this year, announced her plans to leave the organization at year’s end. Darr returns to CLIA, having previously held the post of Senior Vice President of Technical and Regulatory Affairs from 2010 to 2017. Darr joins CLIA from MSC Group where he served as Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs for more than seven years. He has also held positions within the U.S. Coast Guard, including Deputy Chief of Maritime & International Law, and he has served in the U.S. Navy, Merchant Marine, and Coast Guard. 💬 “I am thrilled to be returning to CLIA, and I am grateful for the confidence that the Global Executive Committee and CLIA-member lines have placed in me,” Darr commented. “With the dynamic changes and opportunities ahead, this industry is poised to set new pathways and raise the bar for innovation and sustainability. I am eager to harness our collective expertise to propel us toward an even brighter future. Together, we will navigate the global complexities and reach significant milestones.” In his role as President and CEO, Darr will lead the next phase of CLIA’s global strategy at an important time for the industry as the cruise sector builds on a strong and responsible growth trajectory in support of its 2050 sustainability targets. A highly respected figure in the maritime world, Darr brings exceptional maritime experience and outstanding relationships across the global cruise industry and its related trade, equipment, ports, shipbuilders, and service providers. 🛳️ #WeARECruise

Are younger travellers making cruising cool again? When it comes to appealing to a younger generation, the cruise industry is pushing the envelope more than ever: from shorter itineraries and risqué entertainment to active excursions and flexible dining options. Find out more about this growing trend in our special Cruise guide, distributed with the Jan/Feb 2025 issue of National Geographic Traveller (UK).  Elsewhere in the guide, we explore the top 25 islands to visit in 2025 — from snorkelling in Thailand’s Andaman Sea to encountering curious creatures in Southern Africa’s Lake Kariba. CLIA | Cruise Lines International Association has welcomed 100 new travel agent members to its ranks following a full-day workshop held this week at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. The event was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Travel Agent Owners Association (HKTAOA), CLIA, and @Worldwide Cruise Terminals (WCT), with the support of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). It provided Hong Kong travel agents with valuable insight into the latest developments within the global cruise industry and the opportunities it presents within Asian markets. CLIA Head of International Training & Development Peter Kollar led the in-person training, giving participants an opportunity to enhance their cruise knowledge and sales techniques. The workshop included an inspection of the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal facilities and an onboard tour of Norwegian Spirit, allowing agents to gain first-hand experience of modern cruise offerings. "This workshop demonstrates the growing interest in cruising among Hong Kong travel agents. By providing comprehensive education and practical experience, we're equipping these professionals to better serve their clients and capitalise on a thriving cruise sector." Worldwide Cruise Terminals Managing Director Jeff Bent said the event had highlighted Hong Kong’s growing importance as a major international cruise hub. “We’re delighted to welcome CLIA back in 2024 for this important initiative. Having a large body of qualified travel agents able to recommend the right cruises for the right guests is critical to the success of the market in the long run, and CLIA’s industry-leading training gave participants a solid introduction plus access to ongoing learning opportunities to help them, and their guests, on their journeys. ” As new participants in CLIA’s 2025 Australiasia and Asia Membership program, the workshop attendees gain access to CLIA’s comprehensive range of professional development and events initiatives, including extensive education programs, online tools and downloadable resources, recognition through the CLIA Certification Program, and the opportunity to attend CLIA events worldwide.
