The future of chemical engineering is in one more pair of good hands! I am proud to share that my 1st PhD student, Ewa (Richard) Chukwu, has passed his dissertation defense today! During the last four years with my group, Ewa was instrumental in setting up at least three major experimental apparatus, published three 1st-author papers in leading catalysis journals, and received three external recognitions. I cannot wait to see Dr. Ewa’s future career to unfold with Dow! Many thanks to the committee Ana C. Alba-Rubio David Bruce Olin Thompson Mefford for making Ewa’s journey great at Clemson University Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering!

Today, I had the amazing opportunity to present my research at the BMES Conference in Baltimore alongside my labmate Sophia Fetten. It was an incredible experience to share our work and engage with others in the field. A huge thank you to Dr. Jessica Larsen and Clemson University Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department for making this possible. I learned so much and had an amazing time at the conference!

Ana C. Alba-Rubio and my groups had a great time hosting Professor David Flaherty to give a fantastic seminar and to spend hours chatting with our passionate students on a range of topics from catalytic kinetics to spectroscopic studies. Thanks Dave for supporting the growth of catalysis research at Clemson University Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering!

Successful alumna and new Professional Advisory Board member, Dr. Shana Bunker, visited Prof. Ogale’s office to see his historical collection of samples produced by his students. Shana holds a 3-D printed part she produced by the Stereolithography process in 1997 when she worked in the Ogale Group as an undergraduate assistant!

Researchers at the Clemson University Eukaryotic Pathogens Innovation Center are developing methods to combat brain-eating amoebas. These amoebas, known as Naegleria fowleri, reside in warm freshwaters and can cause a fatal brain infection if entered through the nose. Serita Acker, Exe.Director, MHRD, GCDF (right) has drawn on her experience as executive director of PEER & WISE Clemson to write two books that describe in simple terms what engineers and scientists do. This week we had six 3rd and 4th year students come and speak to the CHE 2110 Mass & Energy Balance class about their co-op and internship experience. It was great seeing the more senior students provide insight to our rising ChBE 2nd year students

Meet Dr. Majors, ChBE's new Assistant Professor! Dr. Cat Majors earned her B.Eng. in Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University and her PhD in Bioengineering from Rice University where her research focused on the development of new methods to detect bacterial infections. She comes to us having just finished her postdoc at Northwestern University where she worked on split enzyme engineering. Here at Clemson, Dr. Majors is excited to build a research program centered on the engineering of novel protein signaling networks that can be applied for the development of technologies for disease detection and therapeutics, expanding access to healthcare in under-served populations. When not working in the lab, Dr. Majors can be found attempting to train her beagle Winston, raising chickens, riding her bike, knitting tiny sweaters, and sampling all the craft beer she can find.
