Remote vs. in-person? Does it matter? I was talking to Steve Carse about remote, hybrid, and in-person work. We both think that broadly, we’re missing the real issue: community. People want to be in person on their terms – when they want to be, where they want to be, and with people they enjoy working with. It’s about the community. The problem arises when any of those factors are out of sync. When you’re in the wrong place, at the wrong time, or with the wrong people, it’s hard to feel engaged. It’s not so much about the location of work as it is about the conditions that make work enjoyable. If all those conditions are right, in-person work can be amazing. So instead of debating which work environment is “best,” let’s focus on creating environments – remote or in-person – where people have the autonomy to choose the setup that works for them.
