About us
The City of Berkeley is distinguished by its diversity, community engagement, and activism. Home to the University of California’s flagship campus, Berkeley’s population is highly educated, diverse, and engaged. The City lies on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay and is sheltered by rolling hills on its eastern border. Berkeley spans 10 square miles with 124,000 residents. Our climate is mild year-round, with cool summers. An outdoor focus is demonstrated with acres of open space, parks, and an abundance of bike lanes on City streets. Public transportation is well developed and reliable, with three Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stations in Berkeley. All of these factors translate to an outstanding quality of life for Berkeley residents, with an abundance of outdoor, recreational, and cultural activities. The City of Berkeley lies in Alameda County and operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City is divided into eight districts, and each district elects one representative to the City Council. The eight-member City Council serves four-year terms, and a mayor is elected at large – also on a four-year term. The City Council appoints a City Manager, who serves as the Chief Executive of the City. Berkeley provides a comprehensive range of municipal services to its population, many of which are not typically provided by cities. In addition to the customary city services, the City of Berkeley operates its own Health, Housing and Community Services Department, providing public health, mental health, and environmental health services to the community. The City also provides its own residential and commercial solid waste collection, recycling, and disposal service. In addition, the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department offers a number of summer camps and operates a 1,000-berth marina. Join the City of Berkeley team. Congrats to staff in Planning and Economic Development for this well-deserved award! Their hard work to adjust zoning regulations is helping Berkeley's culture and local businesses thrive.
Congratulations to the City of Berkeley for winning this year's APA California - Northern Section Excellence Award for Economic Planning & Development. This award recognizes the city's work preparing Zoning Amendments for Berkeley Business. Join us in congratulating this planning achievement. In 2024, the Berkeley City Council adopted a set of zoning amendments intended to “to streamline the zoning review process” for Berkeley businesses and bolster Berkeley’s diverse commercial districts. The zoning recommendations were developed to encourage local economic development and enhance cultural offerings in an equitable manner across Berkeley ‘s commercial districts. The changes to the zoning ordinance are wide ranging; spanning the permitting of group class instruction, the service of distilled spirits, hours of operation, live entertainment, pet stores, art and craft studios, outdoor food service, and the removal of restrictions related to change of use, food service quotas, and rentals of food service establishments to third parties. These recommendations unanimously adopted by Berkeley‘s City Council (Item 16), advance the City’s Strategic Plan goals to foster a dynamic, sustainable, and locally-based economy and to provide excellent, timely, easily accessible service and information to the community. Get your tickets to attend the 2024 Awards Gala to celebrate our deserving winners and their outstanding work in our field as exemplified by this dynamic team - bit.ly/APACANorthernGala24

The end of the financial year is always a busy time for our Finance Department as they record transactions, reconcile accounts, review expenses and revenues, organize financial records, and complete countless other tasks in order to close the last fiscal year. Their diligent work culminates in the production of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for the City. The ACFR contains details about all the City’s financial activities for the fiscal year. The report gives Berkeley residents, the City Council, investors, bond holders, Federal, State and County Agencies and the public a thorough and accurate look at the City's finances. Thank you, Finance team, for providing the data that enables informed financial decision-making.

The intersection of Claremont and Russell is looking better than ever thanks to repaving and striping coordinated by Public Works Engineering and Streets & Utilities staff. The smooth streets and clearly painted crosswalks coordinated by the Public Works team help make Berkeley's streets safer for all. This project is part of the City's annual street rehabilitation efforts, which completed 11 lane miles of street paving and 5 lane miles of surface sealing in FY 22-23. Thank you to Public Works Engineering and Streets & Utilities staff and to the members of the community who came out to celebrate.

As part of the 2024 Berkeley Juneteenth Festival, the City of Berkeley unveiled the newest addition to its public art collection - Delivered, Mable’s Promissory Note, by artist Mildred Howard. The 10’ diameter bronze sculpture weighs nearly 3000 pounds and is installed on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Adeline Street, just south of the Ashby BART Station. The title of this artwork pays tribute to the artist’s mother, Mable Howard, who led the effort to oppose the above-ground BART line in Berkeley which would have divided the community. Kudos to the Civic Arts team and the Civic Arts Commission for coordinating the commission, installation, and celebration! Find more public art in Berkeley:
