We are so grateful to have had staff and volunteers gathered under one tent (minus our Youth Coordinator, Chelsea). We gave out an amazing spread this past weekend: yellow risotto with vegan parmesan, sautéed asparagus, peas, tofu mushroom spinach soup, hot green tea, three types of cake, oranges, tangerines, and two types of vegan cheese with crackers! 🌱 Huge thank you to Shawn Bannon, Director of The Smell of Money Documentary, for coming out to film us! 🌱 CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCEMENT! 🌱 We are excited to announce that we have joined the Big Apple Kids’ Meal Campaign to advocate for healthier kids’ meals in chain restaurants! Int. 0641 is a crucial NYC Council bill aimed at improving the health standards of children's meals in chain restaurants. Chronic diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes disproportionately impact NYC children, particularly those from marginalized communities. With one-third of U.S. children consuming fast food and sugary drinks daily, we must take action. A study from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) reveals that 71.9% of children's meals at top chain restaurants fail to meet expert nutrition standards. Fortunately, legislation like Int. 0641 can improve nutrition standards and increase access to healthy whole foods, leading to better health outcomes in NYC. Chilis on Wheels supports the *plant-based* provisions of Int. 0641, which require NYC restaurants to offer at least two children's meals meeting specific nutritional standards, including whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. The bill also seeks to limit sodium and added sugars, and encourages restaurants to provide plant-based protein options such as tofu, seitan, and tempeh. Please help us to pass this bill by taking action: 1. Join us on Wednesday, December 4th, at 10 AM for a City Council hearing at City Hall. https://lnkd.in/gdrz7RJC 2. Have your organization sign on to endorse the bill. https://lnkd.in/gFavzTDF 3. Contact your City Council member to urge support for Int. 641. https://lnkd.in/ePf-Dvs This bill is a crucial step in addressing health and nutrition inequities and expanding access to whole foods. By supporting it, we are advocating for healthier meals for children today and creating a foundation for future plant-based legislation in NYC. #BigAppleKidsMealCampaign #PlantBased #HealthyKids #NYC #FoodJustice #NY #KidsMeals #FastFood #FoodAccess #FoodInsecurity #Policy #HealthyFood #Nutrition #Advocacy #Hunger #NYCVegans #FoodSovereignty #NYCFood #KidsMeals #Vegan #ClimateJustice #FoodSystems

As we head into #ClimateWeekNYC we are reminded that local solutions led by and co-created with frontline communities are the way forward. That is why our work at the federal and international level always centers those who are most impacted. We will not solve the climate crisis without Indigenous sovereignty, Black liberation, gender justice, and the protection and inclusion of elders, children, and people with disabilities. No more false climate solutions! A huge thank you to our incredible team, our partners, and to all our volunteers who make local solutions come to life every day by increasing access to education, resources, and climate-friendly food. Thank you Anthony, Maria, and Noelle! #ClimateWeekNYC2024 #Vegan #PlantBased #FoodSystems #Community #CommunityFridge #VeganCommunityFridge #PlantBasedCommunityFridge #ClimateJustice #FoodJustice
