The old way of immediately saying "OK" when a clinician says something is out, and the new way of saying "OK, why?" is in. This is a personal story: My goddaughter was born with a hemangioma on her eye and has been seeing specialists monthly since she was born. Upon entering her latest visit at the opthamologist, her parents were brought in the room and asked to hold her down so the nurse could put dilating drops in her eye. Respectfully, her mom asked a perfectly acceptable question, "Ok, why does she need them?" to which the nurse replied, "she needs the drops before the doctor can see her." This conversation repeated itself 2 or 3 more times until the nurse agreed to check with the doctor before giving the drops. Minutes later, the nurse returned and stated that, actually, she didn't need the drops for this appointment and the doctor would be in soon. My goddaughter's mom attributed her advocacy skills to coming from what she's learned through our relationship and my work with Child Life On Call: that parent voices, experiences, gut feelings and questions can transform a healthcare experience for their child. This is the exact scenario that demonstrates that an empowered parent who knows how to advocate, and a care team member who verifies information when requested by the parent, are able to deliver excellent care - as a team. #teamapproach #healthcare #advocacy #pediatrics #digitalhealth #childlifespecialist #childrenshealth
