Did you know that lightning is hotter than the surface of the sun and can reach temperatures around 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit? So, when you see a flash, immediately dash inside! NO PLACE outside is safe when thunderstorms hit your area. You are safest indoors or inside a metal hard-topped vehicle. For more information about how to be prepared, please visit readync.gov.

Are you ready for thunderstorms and high winds? This week we're discussing severe weather as part of NC's preparedness week. NC experiences about 40-50 thunderstorm days per year. About 10% of those are classified as severe – one that produces hail at least an inch in diameter, has winds of 58 miles per hour or stronger, or produces a tornado. Strong winds can turn tree branches and ordinary loose objects into dangerous projectiles — help your community stay safe by trimming trees and picking up loose items. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a storm. Make sure to get everyone inside at the first sign of thunder or lightning and keep them inside until at least 30 minutes after the last sign of thunder or lightning. Did you know this week is Severe Weather #Preparedness Week in NC? To recognize the importance of disaster readiness, the National Weather Service is providing tips throughout the week to increase overall resilience ahead of the 2024 disaster season. Today, we are covering the importance of receiving Severe Weather Alerts. There are multiple ways to receive alerts such as via your local radio and tv stations, a NOAA weather radio, Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), cell phone apps, Emergency Alert Systems (EAS) and more. WEAs are emergency messages sent by authorized government alerting authorities through your mobile carrier. Visit www.ready.gov/alerts to ensure you are receiving WEAs and for troubleshoot support if you are not.
