I was honored to moderate a panel discussion at the City of Leavenworth, Kansas's Business Symposium today. The theme of the symposium was "Elevate & Innovate," and I had the pleasure of interviewing Jeff Chalabi, President of Central Bag Company, Jack Waldron, Chief Operating Officer of CII Foods, and David Schroeder, President and CEO of Great Western Manufacturing on their best advice to other business owners on handling challenges, staying innovative, and creating a positive environment where employees feel engaged, heard, and appreciated. Keynote speaker Dr. Jason Bosch with the Kansas Leadership Center emphasized the importance of fostering leadership at all levels of an organization and that anyone can be leader. As one of his slides put it, "Leadership is an activity, not a position or authority." The KU Small Business Development Center gave an excellent presentation on strategic planning for small businesses, and breakout sessions covered new product development and capital and resources available for start-ups and expansions. Assistant City Manager Penny Holler MPA was the architect of the event and provided a wealth of resources and information for business owners all in one place today.
