During CASA volunteer training, a key focus is cultural competence. This training helps volunteers become aware of their own biases and understand the root causes of oppression and discrimination that children from marginalized communities may face. Being sensitive, supportive, and responsive to cultural differences is just one of the many ways our volunteers bring hope to children in need. All CASA volunteers follow the "Best Interest" principal when advocating for a child. CASA volunteers get to know and understand the child, and use fact-based recommendations in court. Some of the questions volunteers use to guide their recommendations are: • Is the child safe? • Is the child’s unique culture being respected? • What are the special needs of this child? • Is the child receiving the emotional nurturance necessary for healthy brain development? Studies show that youth in foster care are at a higher risk of attempting or seriously considering suicide. Many young people who are having these thoughts show warning signs. Knowing the warning signs and risk factors can help foster caregivers and families intervene and get the young person connected with assistance. Reminding your foster child that you or another caring adult will be there to listen whenever they need is a huge step to suicide prevention. It is vital that children in foster care know they have someone they can talk to and trust with any problems they are facing.
