Non-motorized transportation – walking, biking, or travel by a non-motorized device such as a scooter - has seen an increase within communities across the State of Michigan and beyond. In recent years, planning has shifted from streets that are designed primarily to convey vehicular traffic, to designing streets that accommodate all users. We at Carlisle | Wortman Associates assisted the City of Northville, MI with the creation of a "Non-Motorized Transportation Plan" that included both "on-the-road and off-the-road facilities" that addressed shared lanes for the community and worked to create a framework for a city-wide network of sidewalks and bikeways. In the fall of 2018, with the assistance and guidance of Carlisle | Wortman Associates, Ypsilanti Township launched a community-based, master plan process called "Ypsilanti Township 2040." Our work helped create a policy road map for land use, development, reinvestment, transportation and housing. In doing so, we developed and implemented a public engagement plan by actively gathering feedback and opinions from residents, businesses, and other stakeholders ensuring the final plan aligned with the needs and desires of the people it would impact. The "Farmland and Open Space Preservation Program" consists of several methods for preserving farmland and is part of the State of Michigan’s "Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act" which seeks to seeks to safeguard agricultural and open spaces. We at Carlisle | Wortman Associates are pleased to share the following The Sun Times News article that covers how the Monroe County Board of Commissioners is considering applications to include two properties — one in Milan Township and one in Dundee Township — in the state's beneficial conservation program. "While both properties meet the program’s requirements, the Milan Township property’s combination of high-yield agricultural soil, a larger cultivated area, and the inclusion of conservation-designated open space distinguishes it as a priority for preservation efforts." Zoning ordinances are very important for planning as they act as a primary tool for local governments to manage land use and essentially, help cities and townships develop in ways that align with the needs and desires of residents by regulating what can be built where. We at Carlisle | Wortman Associates are well versed on the topic and have provided assistance and management on zoning regulations to many of our clients throughout Michigan. Specifically, we helped draft the Pittsfield Charter Township Zoning Ordinance which established provisions to strengthen rural areas and economic vitality of agriculture, preserve and promote strong existing neighborhoods, integrate art and culture into the public realm, encourage public gathering places, and promote higher density mixed use development at six focused areas of the community. We at Carlisle | Wortman Associates are proud of the communities we work alongside and celebrate their accomplishments. With that said, we would like to take the opportunity to highlight our client of nearly 30 years, the City of Plymouth, Michigan, and the recent Michigan Economic Development Corporation success story of how a blighted, condemned property in their historic old village was given new life. The following article highlights how local engineering consulting company GreenPath Design acquired the building and, with the help of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, has helped "kick off a wave of revitalization in the historic old village."
