Graniterock rebuilt San Francisco’s Wells Fargo Express Building at Market and 2nd Street following the 1906 earthquake. Two extra stories were added while fireproofing and stabilizing the building. Soon after its completion, the expanded structure became home to the California Supreme Court. The building still stands today, a testament to Graniterock’s commitment to quality & timeless craftsmanship. Be sure to check it out next time you are in SF!

Tomorrow I am presenting to the California State Mining and Geology Board (SMGB) on an important topic for the #mining industry—the California Metallic Mining Backfill Regulations. My presentation is titled: To be a Clean Energy Leader, California Should Maximize its Production of Critical Materials and Metallic Minerals and Reconsider the Metallic Mining Backfill Regulations. Do you know that California is the only state in the nation that requires the backfilling of open pits developed to mine metals? The regulations don’t stop there. They also require that any materials stored on a metallic mining site be removed after mining, or filled into the pit, so that the resulting topography does not exceed 25 feet above the pre-mining surface contour elevations. The regulations have a chilling effect on the development of California critical materials and minerals. California is a clean energy leader. Its plans will require tons of metals and minerals. Unfortunately, a significant amount of critical materials and minerals are mined and processed overseas, including in countries that lack environmental laws or worker safety protections. California is endowed with vast mineral resources, including deposits of critical materials and minerals for which there are no substitutes. California can and should develop these resources to produce the raw materials necessary for the nation’s clean energy future. By reconsidering the backfill regulations, we can encourage mining while at the same time protecting the environment and generating good jobs. #criticalmaterials #minedinAmerica
