“Hydroxyurea is vastly underutilized in people with sickle cell disease. At BMC Health System, providing expert and equitable care means going beyond what has been traditionally considered medicine. To more holistically support our patients and communities, BMC Health System developed Clean Power Prescription, a first-in-the-nation pilot program that allows BMC providers to write patients a prescription for a reduced utility bill. Today, the program is helping eligible patients power essential medical devices, run appliances such as refrigerators, and keep their homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Miriam Komaromy, MD, medical director of BMC's Grayken Center for Addiction, visited the White House to discuss ways to improve quality measures for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) treatment. Dr. Komaromy provided expertise on access to high-quality treatment and support for the workforce in OUD care. BMC's Grayken Center is a national leader in clinical care, research and policy related to substance use disorders.
