infra 3.0 here we come.

was recently listing to a podcast on datacenter energy management... turns out there are a LOT of parallels to cloud governance; even a unified function... most (all?) applications can be reduced to (something) like -> exaflops per sec, per $ of capex, per watt of electricity it stands to reason that, if applications are energy constrained (why wouldn't they be?), then when optimizing for application cost, the TYPE of energy you consume is relevant to distance your data has to travel. let that sink in. i might add an additional constraint pertaining to customer expectations, but that formula effectively means there is a relationship between distance data has to travel and the cost per watt / type of energy source used to process it... preliminary research suggest's this is not already a "law" so i'm going to call it "proctor's law" until proven otherwise. 😂 refinement to come. overarching theory first heard on Patrick O'Shaughnessy, CFA's podcast: "invest like the best"; adjusted to fit the cloud governance space; give credit to originating thoughts where due. 🖖

our first company tshirts said “major tom, this is cloud control”; and we are still committed to that mission… BUT… i was listening to a podcast recently and the interviewee codified our message even better (albeit, referring to software writlarge) “[we are] moving from RULES-based management in software, to GOALS-based management [in software]…” THIS is how we should be thinking about architecture. cloud infrastructure. hell, *everything* it’s not about right sizing. it’s not about your freaking workflows. it’s about the goals OF YOUR CUSTOMERS how well YOU understand them. and how WELL you built your application to meet those needs. *end rant* 🖖

really excited to share our new documentation 🥳 we took “do things that don’t scale” seriously… all docs up until this point were written in a public google doc. 😂 automated readme updates (and a custom domain added to the site) will ensure accessible, accurate, up-to-date, information for engineers and solution architects looking to level up their cloud governance game. https://lnkd.in/gCpVpWZN

🚀 Transforming Cloud Cost Management with BlueArch FinOps 🚀 I recently had the pleasure of discussing cloud cost management with the team at BlueArch , thanks to Brendan Walsh's expert facilitation. 💼 The insights from this conversation have truly transformed how I view FinOps. 🔍 Key Takeaways: 🚀System Usage Analysis: BlueArch's CLI tool provides deep insights into cloud resource usage, helping identify areas for optimization. 🚀Automated Optimization: Their tool automates upgrades from gp2 to gp3 storage and cleans up unattached volumes—saving both time and money! 🚀Custom Purchase Profiles: Tailor cloud investments based on specific needs, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently. 💡 Why It Matters: Effective cloud cost management is crucial for long-term success, and BlueArch's solutions lay the groundwork for sustainable operations. Their tools are a game-changer for anyone looking to optimize their cloud infrastructure. 🙏 Special Thanks: A big shoutout to Brendan Walsh for making this discussion happen and sharing his invaluable expertise! If you're looking to optimize your cloud costs, I highly recommend reaching out to BlueArch. Their innovative solutions could be the key to unlocking significant savings and performance improvements. 💡 #FinOps #CloudManagement #CloudOptimization #BlueArch #DevOps

i talk a lot about the "data mesh" culture (thank you Kara for turning me on to the phrase!), and how finops is following suit; good to see it be formally recognized by the FinOps Foundation! this is precisely why we (BlueArch) decided to go the not-so-traditional route and build a CLI tool (as opposed to a dashboard)... ...to empower every engineer to ship secure, cost efficient, performant, and reliable applications from the comfort of their terminal.

After a brilliant day yesterday, already up a excited for Day 2. Below is a picture from Ellie from Disney’s brilliant talk about how they revolutionised their forecasting. I wonder what brilliant things I may learn today. For those at the conference I’ve not met up with today, please do stop me if you see me to say hi! For those back home in the UK and beyond; make sure you watch as many of these brilliant sessions on YouTube when they drop!

really cool tool to test aws region latencies... you might be surprised... the closest region isn't always the fastest! i happen to be twice as far away from us-west-1 as i am us-west-2, but us-west-2 is *more* than 4x slower! 🤯
