  • The text explores the two sides of cybersecurity: ethical defenders and malicious attackers. Both require significant technical skill, but their motivations and goals differ dramatically. Ethical professionals strive to protect systems and data, while attackers exploit vulnerabilities for personal gain or to cause harm. The text emphasizes the importance of "thinking like a hacker" for ethical defenders, understanding their tactics to better anticipate and defend against threats. However, it stresses the critical need for ethical guidance and a commitment to using these skills for good.

  • Imagine a world where our communities could not only withstand the devastating blows of natural disasters but actually thrive in the face of adversity. A world where small businesses, the backbone of our economy, are not just surviving but flourishing even after the most extreme weather events. This is not a dream; it's a future we can build together. The US Chamber of Commerce has conducted rigorous research, and the numbers speak for themselves: investing in disaster resilience is not just a moral imperative, it's a sound economic decision. By proactively implementing measures to strengthen our infrastructure, enhance community preparedness, and support small businesses in their recovery efforts, we can significantly reduce economic losses, minimize disruptions, and accelerate the path back to prosperity. I urge you, as fellow leaders, to join me in this critical endeavor. Let us work together with the US Chamber of Commerce and other stakeholders to advocate for policies that prioritize disaster resilience. Let us invest in our communities, support our small businesses, and build a future where we can not only withstand the storms but emerge stronger than ever before."

  • Like most days, I found myself rushing between appointments with a peculiar optimism, hoping I'd make it to the next one on time. Yet, as often happens, meetings don’t unfold as expected, and they never end when they’re supposed to. As a result, I missed a significant portion of this event, and that frustration lingered. What I did manage to hear was moving: undocumented members of our community, who once believed their dreams were beyond reach, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunities they had received. These Dreamers, many of whom came to the U.S. as children, now actively contribute to society, becoming valuable, productive members of their communities. It’s easy to forget that Generation X was relatively small compared to the Baby Boomer generation. Without undocumented immigrants helping fill the labor gap, our society would be facing serious challenges, particularly as Baby Boomers retire in large numbers, with over 70% of retire boomers are unwilling to re-enter the workforce. Not even as a part-time help (which I don’t blame them, they earn the right to choose). We need Dreamers—law-abiding, hardworking individuals—who want to stay and contribute. With so many citizens not adhering to the law, we certainly don’t need to add more to that list. California had to raise its minimum wage significantly just to attract workers in certain industries. Governor Jerry Brown, a gifted orator, received praise for his time in office. In his signature humble manner, he responded to his achievements with one phrase: “It was the right thing to do for California.” It’s a theme that’s echoed throughout his tenure and remains central to his outlook. He also emphasized that leadership requires “the ability to feel what the people need and respond with the right policies.” As California looks to the future, Governor Brown remains clear: while he offers his advice, he will not tell Governor Gavin Newsom how to govern. Newsom, he says, is on his own in that regard.

  • Celebrating a Decade of SGMA: Reflecting on California's Water Crisis and Progress. SGMA certainly knows how to celebrate its successes. Former Governor Jerry Brown was on hand to kick off the conference, setting the tone with a reflection on his administration’s response to the 2014 drought. At the time of signing the bill, more than 1,200 wells across the state had run dry, dams were nearing critical lows, and once-green watersheds were either parched or on the verge of drying up. In those difficult times, Governor Brown and his team transitioned from fear to action. He recalled the challenges he faced during his first term in the 1970s, when his water and energy-saving initiatives faced significant political opposition. This time, he said with a grin, “Never let a good crisis go to waste,” echoing the pressing issues that needed attention. He emphasized that failing to act would have left California teetering on the brink of disaster. Known for his decisive leadership, Governor Brown listened intently to the voices around him advocating for solutions to the state’s water crisis. Among those voices were Karen Ross, Cindy Tuck, Roger Dickinson, Lester Snow, and Felicia Marcus, who helped organize the “Roadshow” to assess the agricultural community’s needs and craft a bill that could pass through the legislature. United in their mission, they worked with a single voice to convey the gravity of the crisis facing the state. The next panel focused on the aftermath of the bill’s passage into law. Trevor Joseph, SGMA’s first employee and a licensed professional geologist, shared his insights on the urgency of developing a workable plan and the challenges of navigating committees and meeting deadlines. He spoke candidly about the constant pressure to ensure their plans were accepted and not rejected. Nataly Escobedo Garcia discussed her efforts to engage the Hispanic community, emphasizing the excitement she found when people realized the bill could offer solutions to their own dry wells. Anecita Agustinez shared the hurdles the Native American community faced in cutting through regulatory red tape, which at times hindered their ability to meet the provisions of the new law. Each community played a crucial role in shaping the legislation that is now being celebrated on its 10th anniversary. The conference concluded with Paul Gosselin, Director of Sustainable Water Management, expressing his pride in showcasing the remarkable work achieved through SGMA and the progress made over the past decade. #SGMA10years
