A hotter planet could be losing its ability to keep greenhouse gas emissions stored away. The Arctic permafrost that keeps massive amounts of methane frozen underground is thawing – increasing the risk of releasing catastrophic amounts of methane into the atmosphere. And methane is the greenhouse gas that is warming our planet fastest, with 80X the heating potency of CO2. By eliminating the methane emissions currently in the atmosphere, we can stave off a “methane bomb” out of the thawing Arctic. Methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gasses, is in fact 30 times as potent as carbon dioxide and plays a critical role in climate change, so innovations like these are crucial in the fight for a sustainable future. 🚢 We’re excited to share that lomarlabs, the corporate venture lab of Lomar Shipping, one of our #maritime subsidiaries, recently collaborated with Bennu (formerly Blue Dot Change), a Silicon Valley climate tech start-up, to successfully test their cutting-edge methane removal technology. ⚓️ The pilot project took place aboard Lomar’s #bulkcarrier ‘Syros Trader’ in Baltimore, testing the system's ability to destroy methane using a process inspired by natural phenomena in the stratosphere. This technology aims to revolutionize the reduction of #methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gasses, unlike conventional methods that attempt capturing it. To optimize this #technology, the Bennu team tested the effectiveness of the system and collected data that will inform the goal of full-scale production by summer 2025, with a target to remove over 100 megatons of methane annually by 2028.
