It's the most wonderful (and busiest!) time of the year for #ChoirsBeatingTime. Between rehearsals for Christmas concerts, family visits and carol services, our choirs are in full swing. This week, during our Wednesday afternoon session at HMP Maidstone, we paused to chat with some of our singers about what being part of the choir means to them. The Maidstone Jammers, led by our brilliant Musical Directors Gavin and Olly, have been making music for ten years—and they’re going strong. With big plans to record another album in early 2025 (watch this space 👀) their talent and commitment continue to shine. Here’s what some of our singers had to say:
Beating Time
Non-profit Organizations
Supporting people serving prison sentences to improve their mental health, promote social inclusion and find employment.
About us
Beating Time is an award-winning charity helping people survive a prison sentence and thrive on the outside. Set up in 2014, we run two programmes aimed at helping people put prison behind them and build lives they want to live. 👉 Choirs Beating Time runs prison choirs that serve their communities whilst preserving mental health. People who feel excluded and have poor mental health cannot find, or make, work. We work to improve mental health and build social inclusion, helping people inside find a sense of belonging. 👉 Inside Job is a small but highly effective in-prison recruitment consultancy. It is designed and run by and for people who have served a sentence, matching work-ready prisoners with employers. Prison affects huge numbers of people in the UK: the 89,000 inside, the 70,000 released each year and the 320,000 children with a parent in prison. We are spending millions building more prisons when other countries are closing theirs and cutting crime. Prison, as we do it, does not reduce crime and damages our society. All our programmes reinforce non-criminal identity, whether as singers, songwriters, performers, entrepreneurs, workers or parents. We believe in the people we work with and invest in them creatively, emotionally and financially. We create the opportunity for them to contribute, on lots of levels: to their prison community as performers, to their families at our Family Days, and to the workforce, through Inside Job. By retaining a sense of self and creating opportunities we generate hope and motivation. @Beating_Time info@beatingtime.org

Yesterday some of our team headed over to Beckton to meet one of our employer partners HSS Hire. The wonderful Laura, who runs their prison leaver programme kindly took the time to take us round the depot. The tour included speaking to the real life prison leavers in their working in their roles. It was so valuable to see the programme impact up close. We've had five placements so far and are looking forward to growing this number in 2025.

Today we visited the wonderful Koestler Arts exhibition ‘No Comment’ on its opening morning at the Southbank Centre. It was great to see such a varied and powerful range of artwork on display, from paintings and ceramics to recordings and matchstick models! Having won over 50 awards for #ChoirsBeatingTime, we are big supporters of Koestler and continue to admire their dedication to bringing creativity to the criminal justice system. Together we can make art accessible in prison. On until 15th December, it’s free and non-ticketed. Visit while you can! https://lnkd.in/dYnbkNUP

Scott has hit 50... job starts! Today we're celebrating Scott Hewitt, our tireless Employment Consultant. He has helped 50 people leaving prison to secure employment since he joined our West Midlands team in March this year. Scott runs our Inside Job desk in HMP Stoke Heath and supports candidates leaving HMPs Sudbury and Birmingham. He has run a number of interview surgeries with high-quality employers like Willmott Dixon and O’Neill & Brennan UK to create real opportunities for people serving sentences. From drafting CVs to sourcing interview clothes, he's been a huge source of support and guidance for our candidates at every stage on the road to work. Scott shone as a recruiter and now we're proud to have him on board as an outstanding Consultant, both inside and in the community. Here's to the next 50! 🎉

Last week, Liv and Jem had the opportunity to visit our Midlands team and see first-hand how the Inside Job programme is making an impact at HMP Hewell and Stoke Heath. The visit allowed them to discuss with the recruiters and community team how the delivery is working. Understanding the on-the-ground implementation of each of our programmes is crucial for the growth of our hubs and highlights the access our team is able to provide. It was really important for our team to understand how each Inside Job desk operates and see the successes we are having and the potential we have for the months ahead. Thank you to Jamie, Jon and Scott for showcasing all the work being done to deliver our programme.

This #NationalCareLeaversWeek, is an opportunity to shine a light on care-experienced individuals within the prison system. Did you know that around 25% of people in prison in the UK come from care and nearly 50% of under 21 year olds in contact with the criminal justice system have spent time in care. Care experienced are 7 times more likely to end up imprisoned than their peers who are not in care. For many, the transition out of care means navigating the world without the safety net others might take for granted, including stable housing, consistent education and a strong support network. This week reminds us that as a small aspect of their support, we play a vital role in breaking down the barriers that hold care leavers back. Investing in them benefits society as a whole, reducing reoffending and promoting real rehabiliation.
