Associate Director - Export Finance Australia | Supporting Australian businesses to expand internationally | Finance solutions for Exporters | Government Export Credit Agency
Last week I attended the Battery Recycling and Manufacturing Summit and joined a panel discussion on investment and corporate activity in this space. Thank you to Katharine Hole, CEO of Association for the Battery Recycling Industry for inviting Export Finance Australia to participate in these discussions. Personally I learnt alot from the various sessions on the day. With our transition to a clean energy future, lithium-ion batteries are now a major part of our every day lives. Batteries in our phones, laptops, power tools and electric vehicles. As the demand for these goods grow so does the waste stream. When disposed of incorrectly, lithium batteries cause contamination and can pose fire and explosion risks. We heard some interesting tests and research being conducted to understand the fire risks associated from overcharging and overheating batteries and the work being done to help navigate these risks. Having processes in place for safe disposal and recycling of batteries will become increasingly more important so it was great to hear across a broad range of organisations taking action in this space towards a circular economy.

Yesterday, our founder, Troy Rowe, had the privilege of speaking at the Australian Battery Manufacturing & Recycling Summit in Sydney. He joined a panel on "Managing Risk," where he brought a crucial perspective from the front lines of an operating company. Troy highlighted the pressing challenges our industry faces, emphasising the skyrocketing cost of insurance, the urgent need for enhanced fire infrastructure, and the inherent risks posed by embedded battery products—particularly lithium-ion batteries, which are a significant factor in fire risk. It was a powerful discussion, and we're proud to be part of a conversation that's driving real change in the industry. #2024BatterySummit, Association for the Battery Recycling Industry.
