Last night, on November 8th, I had the honor of attending a reception hosted by the President of Portugal at the iconic Museu dos Coches in Lisbon. I was there with one of my teammates and a friend, both passionate entrepreneurs like myself. Alongside us were several startups, all gearing up for next week’s Web Summit. It was an evening to remember. I listened as industry giants like Paddy Cosgrave, CEO of the Web Summit, and the CEO of Startup Portugal shared their insights. The atmosphere was electric, the venue rich in history, and then… there he was, the President, with his warm, lively energy, cracking jokes and posing playfully for photos with the guests. Amidst all the excitement, something I could never have imagined happened. I suddenly hear: “Please welcome Giulia Milori from Aurora Music!” I look up, and there it is—the logo of my startup shining on the stage screen. I froze, glancing around, wondering if there had been some mix-up. I hadn’t received any confirmation to pitch… or so I thought (found out later that the invite was sitting in my spam folder!). But here I was, with nowhere to run. With no script and no time to rehearse, I took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage. I greeted the President, approached the microphone, and let my passion and improvisation carry me. What a moment. What an honor. This was the culmination of so many steps that started last year with a simple decision to attend my very first Web Summit. This event changed the trajectory of my journey. These artists were incredible today! They experienced the power of composing and collaborating with our platform! This was the first time our CEO, Mia Bastos gave a speech on an international stage. She said: “Taking the platform to this moment was magical. We had @heyitsgiel from the USA singing, @pessoa.lucas on the keyboard, and this amazing artist from the audience, Sayf. We made music, we had fun with a group of people, and what we created had different textures depending on the artists who were playing. When I began this journey in technology, I thought, "This is the last place I imagined music would take me." Never in a thousand years did I picture myself working with technology and leading a team of 7 people towards innovations in the music industry. But here I am. I'm incredibly grateful for the people I've met along the way, who have given me the maturity to lead this project. Great leaders like Fernando Gabriel and Thiago Christof have taught me by example, and I am extremely thankful to have sat at the tables their grand dreams allowed me to join. I also know that I am only venturing into entrepreneurship in Europe because of the incredible support from the team at Startup Lisboa. As soon as a company steps into Lisbon, it immediately realizes its global potential. The current capital of innovation in Europe is magical and connects us with amazing people from all over the world, in ways I could never have imagined. Last Friday marked the official start of Aurora Music's journey towards internationalization. Now, I can proudly say I have a company in Delaware, USA, with subsidiaries in Europe and Brazil, and I know this is just the beginning given the size of our dreams. The challenge is huge, starting with the number of meetings and speeches in English that have landed on my plate in such a short time. But my desire to see this project succeed is greater than any fear. Let's go for it!
