About us
We change the laws to change their lives. Formed in October 2002, Animal Protection Voters (APV), a social welfare [501(c)(4)] organization, lobbies and engages in political activities that promote animal protection in New Mexico. One of the most important tools to reduce animal suffering is create systemic change by passing laws that better protect animals. In order to pass local, state and federal laws, APV strives to build a force that our lawmakers cannot ignore. Making animal issues important to lawmakers involves extensive lobbying, helping to elect good candidates to all kinds of public offices and holding those officials accountable for how they vote on animal issues.

The New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine has adopted new rules to distribute critical state spay/neuter funds, including those from Senate Bill 57! Thanks to APNM’s advocacy, unnecessary income restrictions were removed, ensuring broader access to these services. Funds are expected to be available by Spring 2025, just in time for puppy and kitten season. If you intend to go hiking this holiday season with your dog, please remember to always have your canine companion on a leash. Although Roxy’s Law outlaws most uses of traps, snares, and poisons on public lands, some may choose to violate the law, and many old and forgotten traps still exist in areas an unleashed dog may explore. In addition to keeping your dog safe from traps, leashing helps protect wildlife, control the spread of diseases, and prevent damage to natural vegetation. If you find a trap, snare, or poison on public land, do not tamper with it but immediately report it to the NM Department of Game and Fish by calling 1-800-432-4263 and let us know at our Animal Cruelty Helpline (877-5HUMANE). #animalprotectionvoters #APV #roxyslaw #winterhiking #dogsafety #newmexico #albuquerque

The General Election results are now in, and we are thrilled to announce: 95% of the 75 candidates we endorsed won their races! On behalf of all of us at Animal Protection Voters, congratulations to all those who will go on to serve in the 2025 legislative session. Nationally, we recognize that this year’s election cycle was stressful and contentious, with much at stake, and it’s not yet clear exactly what new barriers and/or opportunities the animal protection movement will face as a result of the elections. But we know we will persevere. We are committed to democracy, science, and compassion. We know how to organize broad coalitions in support of our mission to advocate for animals, and we will continue to do that urgent work going forward, thanks to your considerable support and determination. Locally, we celebrate that our State Legislature is still dominated by policymakers who understand and embrace humane values. And we will look for any opportunity at the national level to support our work and pursue it vigorously. Animal Protection New Mexico is profoundly grateful to announce that the NIH plans to transfer the final 23 chimpanzees at the Alamogordo Primate Facility to the Chimp Haven sanctuary in Louisiana. This comes nearly twenty-five years after the Chimpanzee, Health, Improvement, Maintenance and Protection [CHIMP] Act was signed into law, determining that all former federal research chimpanzees be moved to sanctuary. We want to thank New Mexico’s animal defenders and policymakers for the decades of advocacy that has led us to this moment. APNM will continue to support NIH’s timely and successful transfer of the APF chimps to Chimp Haven and welcomes this opportunity to revise New Mexico’s historical legacy regarding these deserving chimpanzees. #ChimpSanctuary #ChimpHaven #AnimalProtectionNM #APNM #FreedomForChimps
