U.S. staffing companies employed an average of 2.1 million temporary and contract workers per week in the third quarter of 2024, a decline of 38,000 jobs from the previous quarter, according to data from our Q3 quarterly survey. Temporary and contract staffing sales totaled $30.7 billion in the third quarter of 2024, a 0.7% decline from the previous quarter and an 11.4% decline from the third quarter of the previous year. “The Fed's decision to lower interest rates by another 25bps in December further insulates the labor market from potential deterioration in 2025 as it shifts toward a more gradual pace of loosening to combat inflation,” said ASA chief economist Noah Yosif on the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision. “Staffing agencies can expect a slow but steady rebound in labor market activity throughout the new year as the Fed takes a more aggressive approach to price stability.” Read his full statement below.
