Romania 🇷🇴 just halted their presidential election because of #TikTok disinformation. 🌍 A Wake-Up Call for Global Democracies Romania annulled the first round of their presidential election (the Guardian) after a high court ruled that Russian TikTok interference caused a far-right outsider to win. This is a big reminder of the looming threat that misinformation poses to democratic processes, and of how vulnerable the information environment has become in the EU and the West. We are not prepared with the tools needed to combat these information threats. We began hearing concerns of this happening in January: 1️⃣ In the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024 (https://lnkd.in/gVSBSPw2) misinformation was identified as the top risk to democracies over the next five years. 2️⃣ This aligns with findings from the 2040 Interlinked Computing survey (https://lnkd.in/g5z3pdRg), which places misinformation among the top five global risks, emphasizing its potential to divorce politics from reality. One expert put it chillingly: “We’re not going to be living in a George Orwell world. We’re going to be living in a Philip K. Dick world [where] nobody knows what’s true.” Romania’s experience underscores how sophisticated tactics by governments, including AI-driven disinformation campaigns, can weaponize social media to manipulate public opinion so much so that survey results or ballot casting are put into question. In this case, a pro-Putin candidate surged from obscurity to prominence, aided by cyber-attacks and Russian-funded TikTok campaigns that mobilized tens of thousands of fake accounts in mere weeks. What are we doing about this? At Alt House, we are building TruTake 🌐 to tackle this very challenge. By leveraging collective wisdom and advanced AI, we aim to empower people with truth-driven insights that counter misinformation and promote resilience in democratic discourse. This isn’t just about protecting elections; it’s about safeguarding the shared trust that holds societies together.
