Rounded off the year with a visit to some of ACP's partners in India, together with Clarisa De Franco, Dory Li, Ashley Gorman.   We touched down in Delhi amidst the most severe air pollution of the year, with AQI of 500+. You could barely see more than 100m ahead from the smog. Our team witnessed firsthand the importance of sustainable development that addresses both climate and local development needs – something Indian investment managers, the climate finance ecosystem, and the government are committed to.   India is perhaps THE most consequential country for climate because of the massive scale of its current and future emissions. The IEA estimates that by 2050, electricity demand from ACs alone in India is projected to exceed the total power consumption in the entire African continent! India also holds many of the answers to the energy transition with new and affordable technologies and innovative business models that can be transferred to other emerging economies. Electric 2- and 3-wheelers have taken off at unprecedented scale. Solar and wind are being deployed rapidly, with the entire ecosystem seeking to meet the government’s ambitious goal of 500GW of renewable capacity by 2030.   Creative solutions, strong partnerships, and a strong anchor in impact are needed to drive the energy transition. At Allied Climate Partners, we're looking forward to working with local partners to drive that transition as fast as humanly possible.

Last week at COP29, Allied Climate Partners, Climate Policy Initiative, Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), and Three Cairns Group co-hosted a roundtable focused on The World Bank Private Sector Investment Lab’s (PSIL) key objective to elevate the role of equity and junior capital in climate finance. We’re focused on building more robust analytics on where equity dollars are currently flowing, and where they need to flow, leading to a better prioritization of these resources — including the key role of catalytic equity and blended finance.    A big thank you to our co-hosts, partners, and participants that helped make this event a success.

The Future of Blended Finance The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced our blended finance initiative, Financing Asia’s Transition Partnership (FAST-P), at COP28. I had an opportunity to share my thoughts on blended finance at a breakfast event we co-hosted with Allied Climate Partners, Bezos Earth Fund, IFC - International Finance Corporation and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL). We’re using the lessons we’re learning from FAST-P to build the future of blended finance in Asia. What does this future look like? 🔴 Operating Platforms: We will think in terms of operating platforms, not transactions. 🔹 These platforms will allow for capital aggregation and blending at the platform level, so that every philanthropic dollar is able to be amplified fully at the platform level, with further mobilization at the project level. 🔹These platforms must be designed with maximum additionality and minimum concessionality at their core, and allow for more standardized blending and capital structures. This will allow the aggregated capital to be deployed faster, without multiple rounds of negotiation. 🔹These platforms will give us scale, a diversify of use cases, and the aggregation of risks and returns. This will set off a multiplier effect where innovative climate-positive projects and business models grow, acquire track records and become mainstreamed over time. 🔴 Optionality: Different optionality will be provided both for those who contribute capital and those who need capital for transition. This will include a range of products and structures. The future of blended finance would meet markets where they are, offering both equity and debt blended finance funds, particularly in Asia where the paucity of debt financing is a key constraining factor that prevents transition solutions from scaling. 🔴 Ownership: Blended finance will be about collective ownership, not mandate restrictions. We need to step beyond the traditional lines that have held our institutions back. 🔹Sovereigns should step forward to contribute concessional capital to mobilize multiples of commercial capital, as Singapore has done for FAST-P. 🔹 MDBs and DFIs need to be prepared to take more risk with their balance sheet and de-risk platforms using guarantees and other mechanisms. 🔹Philanthropists also play a critical role in providing junior concessional capital that is deeply catalytic. It has been heartening to see FAST-P partners step forward to take on each of these roles. Bit by bit, through FAST-P and our collaborations with many of you, we are building the future of blended finance. I look forward to our continued work together to make this vision a reality. On the sidelines of #UNGA79, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) co-hosted an insightful event together with our partners Allied Climate Partners, Bezos Earth Fund, IFC - International Finance Corporation, and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), that looked at the #climatefinance gap in emerging markets and developing economies and how these can be addressed via catalytic capital interventions.   I highlighted that public financing alone will not close the gap; we must also crowd in private sector investment and scale local currency financing if we are to bridge the climate finance gap in emerging markets and developing economies.
