RELIGIOUS FREEDOM WIN: A Christian homeless ministry in Washington state can now hire staff who share its religious beliefs without fearing government penalties. Last week, a federal court ruled that while our case continues, state officials may not punish Yakima Union Gospel Mission for hiring fellow believers. ADF is representing Yakima Union Gospel Mission in this First Amendment case. The mission serves everyone regardless of background or belief, but as a religious ministry, it employs only likeminded believers who agree with and live out its Christian beliefs and practices—including beliefs on marriage and sexuality. Washington state law prohibits the mission from requiring this. The ministry has several open positions that it needs to hire for as soon as possible, but under Washington law, it risked significant penalties and liability for doing so. In last week’s ruling, the court acknowledged that if the mission “is forced to hire those who do not [share its religious views], or those who do not adhere to those views, it may eventually be extinguished from public life.” Clearly, this would be a loss not just for religious freedom, but for the entire community around Yakima—where the mission provides a homeless shelter, addiction-recovery programs, outreach efforts, meal services, and health clinics. Religious ministries have the constitutional right to hire likeminded believers. We’re grateful the court has protected this right for Yakima Union Gospel Mission as our case continues.

The 2024 election was a mixed bag for the pro-life movement, with ballot victories in 3 states but unfortunate losses in 7 others. This should be a wake-up call. “As a movement, we need to continue educating people. Tearing an unborn child apart in a mother’s womb is not a ‘right.’”

Every day, pregnancy centers give compassionate help to women & unborn children. But although 91% of Americans support PCs, pro-abortion states often target them. During Pregnancy Help Appreciation Week, visit adflegal.org/wecare to see how ADF is working to defend these vital ministries.

In high school, these four female athletes lost races, titles, and opportunities to two males who were allowed to compete in their sports. Now, we're helping these young women sue Connecticut officials. Their case just got a green light to move forward.

WIN FOR WOMEN’S SPORTS: A key women’s sports case is moving forward. Last week, a federal court ruled against Connecticut school officials, denying their motion to dismiss our case. We sued on behalf of four young women who lost races, opportunities, and titles to two male athletes during their high school track careers. “Selina, Chelsea, Alanna, and Ashley—like all female athletes—deserve access to fair competition,” said ADF’s Rachel Rouleau. “The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference’s policy degraded each of their accomplishments and scarred their athletic records, irreparably harming each female athlete’s interest in accurate recognition of her athletic achievements.” The district court rightly recognized that our clients’ schools are potentially liable for discriminating against them and violating Title IX. This is important—not just for the women who have been deprived of medals, potential scholarships, and other athletic opportunities, but for all female athletes across the country. This ruling creates one fewer obstacle for high school girls to face as they pursue their athletic dreams. We’ll keep fighting for reality and fairness as the case moves forward.
