This weekend ATC Executive Director Lisa Jacobs and Vice Board Chair Linda Thoms attended “Eyes on Reading: Julie Washington with Emily Hanford — Supporting African American Children’s Reading Success” at Planet Word. Thank you for the incredible insights!

Today ATC Book Buddies participated in Jumpstart's #ReadForTheRecord. Over two million children read the same book, #PiperChenSings by Phillipa Soo and Maris Pasquale Doran. It is the story of a girl who loves to sing, but finds herself too nervous to perform in front of a crowd. Our Book Buddies read along to hear how the girl learns to overcome her fears and sing her heart out! Happy first day of tutoring! We are buzzing with excitement as ATC tutors and Book Buddies meet for the first time today. These pairs have a grand reading journey ahead of them this year. Look at these smiling faces we found at Patrick Henry and Douglas MacArthur. We believe in you, readers and future leaders!

Teaching kids to read is an excellent way to keep your mind sharp. Carlson, an expert in health and aging, conducted a study on senior citizens who volunteered to teach kindergarten through third graders reading skills in Baltimore. She found that reading tutors staved off cognitive decline, and in some cases, actually increased their brain volume! Tutoring works! 96% of our kindergarten Book Buddies passed their Spring PALS assessment. PALS is a state-wide test children in K-3rd grade take to gauge their literacy skills. We are gearing up for another year of one-on-one reading tutoring for 275 elementary kids in Alexandria City Public Schools!

Please join us in welcoming new Program Assistant, Alexa Allmann, to the ATC team! Alexa will be tutors' first point of contact during the registration process and will provide general program support. She's spent her career in nonprofit administration, most recently serving as General Manager of the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Women, Gender, & Sexuality from the University of Virginia and a Master’s in Christian Education from Union Presbyterian Seminary and brings experience in data management, communications, finance, and human resources. We are thrilled to have her on board.
