A rapid expansion of renewable energy is essential for decarbonizing the steel industry. However, our new report with SteelWatch finds that major steelmakers are falling behind on renewable energy procurement. Korean companies Hyundai Steel and Dongkuk S&C ranked last among major steel companies, declaring zero renewable energy use and no evidence of current RE projects. The steel sector is the largest consumer of coal, with nearly a quarter of the world’s current steel production relying on coal-based blast furnaces and basic oxygen furnaces (BF-BOF), according to the World Steel Association (worldsteel). The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that the iron and steel sector emits 3.7 gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, making it responsible for about 10% of energy sector CO2 emissions. As steel demand continues to rise, emissions from the iron and steel sectors are also rising. Here is yet another story detailing how members of voluntary corporate multi-stakeholder initiatives are failing to take meaningful climate action, despite the so-called “requirements” of membership. Without credible accountability mechanisms, these initiatives provide a safe harbor for inaction and enable companies to make sustainability claims without investing the resources to substantiate them. If companies do not even set the targets that they've promised to set under the Fashion Pact or other initiatives such as the UN Fashion Charter, can we expect them to be held accountable for actually meeting those targets? It's time for companies to stop hiding behind the industry's collective inertia and take bold steps to lead the pack. Their future business depends on it.

Engaging with corporate accountability campaigns may not feel intuitive for companies — and can even sometimes feel uncomfortable — but they offer companies an opportunity to improve their own strategies. Climate campaigns play a crucial role in driving corporate sustainability efforts. They keep companies in check by confronting them with uncomfortable truths and urgent demands for action. Campaigners bring deep expertise and knowledge in analyzing climate processes and sustainability challenges. By engaging with them, companies can leverage their knowledge to address gaps, improve their strategies, and work towards meaningful climate progress. #esg #corporatesustainability #climateaction #campaigning
