Today in Transportation History, 1920: The Passing of an Accomplished Designer of Yachts and Aircraft who was also an Olympic Sailing Gold Medalist. Linton Hope, who earned widespread fame for his contributions to yacht and aircraft design, died in the market town and civil parish of Midhurst in southeastern England. He was 57. Hope had been born April 18, 1863, in northwestern England’s market town and civil parish of Macclesfield as Linton Chorley Hopps. He later changed his last name to Hope. Today in Transportation History, 1903: The Inauguration of the Record-Setting Williamsburg Bridge in New York City. New York City’s Williamsburg Bridge, which crosses over the East River, was formally opened. This structure was the first major suspension bridge in the United States to have steel towers rather than masonry towers. At the time of its debut, the 7,308-foot (2,227-meter)-long structure also enjoyed the distinction of being the world’s longest suspension bridge. Today in Transportation History, 1989: The Opening of a Commuter Rail Station in Florida is Celebrated with a Burst-Through Banner and Plenty of Balloons. A commuter rail station in southeastern Florida’s city of Boynton Beach was officially opened. This station is part of Tri-Rail, an 80-mile (128.7-kilometer)-long commuter rail system serving the Miami metropolitan area and managed by the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority.
