The EPA announced its final National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for six PFAS compounds on April 10. The rule determines legally enforceable levels, called Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs), for PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and HFPO-DA as contaminants with individual MCLs, as well as PFAS mixtures consisting of at least two or more of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and PFBS using a Hazard Index MCL to address their combined and co-occurring levels in drinking water. The requirements of the final NPDWR: ➡️ Public water systems are required to monitor for these PFAS, complete the initial monitoring by 2027, and participate in ongoing compliance monitoring thereafter. Beginning in 2027, water systems must provide the public with details on the levels of the PFAS in their drinking water. ➡️ Public water systems have five years (by 2029) to take steps to reduce the PFAS if monitoring indicates that drinking water levels are higher than the MCLs. ➡️ Beginning in 2029, public water systems that have PFAS in drinking water that violates one or more of the MCLs are required to take steps to decrease PFAS levels in their drinking water and must notify the public of the violation.
