On this #GivingTuesday, we're asking for your support to help us continue advancing newsroom diversity and equitable coverage and representation of communities of color in Oregon and southwest Washington. Here's a recap of what we accomplished in 2024: -Funded our seventh paid summer intern in partnership with the Statesman Journal / Gannett through our AAJA-SPJ Emerging Northwest Journalists Internship program. -Co-sponsored the Building a Better Journalist conference for Oregon journalists, journalism students and journalism educators. -Presented $2,750 in awards to the professional and student winners of our second AAJA Diversity and Inclusion Awards competition. -Became a Literary Arts community partner in support of an appearance by legendary Asian American journalist Connie Chung. -Received a $30,000 grant to support our mission and work from Inatai Foundation. We've already got big plans for 2025. Support us by making a tax-deductible donation and/or picking up some AAJA Portland merch today: https://lnkd.in/g7-5WmqR

OPB has been selected to be part of Report for America’s next newsroom cohort. Report for America is a national service program that places talented emerging journalists in local newsrooms to report on under-covered topics and communities across the United States and its territories. This partnership enables the creation of a new, three-year reporter position for OPB covering Washington, Clackamas and east Multnomah County in Oregon, focused on suburban issues, accountability and regional challenges. The selected reporter will serve as a corp member of Report for America but will be an employee of OPB. The selected reporter will join an elite group of more than 600 Report for America journalists, more than 82 percent of whom continue to work in the field after program completion, demonstrating the power of the program and its local newsroom partners. With nearly half of Report for America journalists identifying as journalists of color, high rates of retention are essential to a transformed news landscape.
