Thank you to all of the Play Equity Fund Made to Play grantees for a wonderful morning last month learning, acting, and growing together during our first Community of Practice (CoP) for the year. Jenny Perla, MPP is partnering with Eva Maria Chavez of Convivio Learning Solutions to facilitate this space and community for a more equitable sports ecosystem specifically for Black and Latina girls in Watts and Boyle Heights. We incorporated #EmergentLearning by asking grantees to envision success for the next year: 1) What does success look like for you as an individual/organization? and 2) What would success look like at the end of the year as a Community of Practice? 🌟 Grateful, Inspired, and Excited 🌟 Just got back from a few amazing days in Anaheim, where I was part of the Imagine US facilitation team for SEIU 2015’s All-Staff Retreat. Feeling re-energized and so grateful to be part of this work! I got to spend time with folks from all over California who work to improve working conditions for long term care professionals—people who care for some of our country’s most vulnerable community members. I’m especially excited about the launch of SEIU 2015’s Latin@x Affinity Group! It’s going to bring an important voice to the table and help create real, meaningful change for staff and members. Being part of a team that helps SEIU 2015 strengthen its work behind the scenes is such a rewarding experience. This organization is powered by regular, down-to-earth people, all committed to making life better for working people. I had the pleasure of reconnecting and unwinding with friends and colleagues, both old and new, at the joint Norwalk and Hawaiian Gardens Community Action for Peace meeting. These dedicated stakeholders are truly committed to fostering positive change in the communities and streets of Southeast LA County. I'm especially proud to see such a worthy initiative continue to thrive after my time with the Trauma Prevention Initiative (TPI). Continuing our Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month series spotlighting powerhouse Latinas we appreciate & collaborate with... 👏🏽 ✊🏽 Today we are excited to spotlight Alex Aguirre Levitas, a Doctoral Candidate in Criminology at UCI, whose research on policing policy and community-driven accountability is shaping real change. Awarded the Haynes-Lindley Fellowship for her focus on Southern California, Alex has led impactful, multi-site, multilingual research across California and Mexico, contributing to violence prevention and criminal justice reform efforts. She also brings passion to the classroom, teaching Criminology and Sociology at UCI and CSU Channel Islands. With over 6 years of experience in DEIB in three different sectors, her approach is people-centered, authentic, and results-driven. Renae began her career as an educator and launched her network's first-ever, school-focused DEIB program. Renae is a Xicana of Pueblo and Yaqui heritage and proud Queer wife, mother and co-parent.
