Working with international clients requires a thoughtful approach, and I often apply the CAGE framework (Cultural, Administrative, Geographic, Economic) to navigate differences. I tailor communication styles to cultural norms, ensuring respect and clarity—for example, being formal and relationship-focused with Japanese clients but direct with German ones. I align with local regulations like GDPR, stay flexible with time zones, and adapt strategies to match economic conditions. For instance, while collaborating with Japanese partners on the TUM Business Game, I adjusted communication styles, managed time zone challenges, and ensured materials were culturally appropriate.

To effectively work with international clients, it's essential to understand and respect their cultural differences, communication styles, and preferences. Start by researching the client's region, values, and business etiquette to adapt your approach accordingly. Tailor communication methods, whether it's through email, phone calls, or video conferencing, based on their preferences. Be mindful of time zones and holidays when scheduling meetings. Additionally, adjust your offerings to align with local market trends and expectations. By demonstrating cultural awareness and flexibility, you can build stronger relationships and meet clients' unique needs effectively.

Understanding cultural nuances isn’t just about crossing borders—it’s about recognizing differences within them. For example, customer preferences in Quebec may differ from those in Western Canada, even though they’re part of the same country. This is where your on-the-ground teams become invaluable. Their local expertise can inform and strengthen your cultural competencies, ensuring your approach resonates with customers in every region. By listening, learning, and adapting, you can deliver a tailored customer experience that makes every interaction meaningful—no matter where they are.

I recommend analyzing and monitoring information on societal changes, market demands, and demographic trends, such as immigration, late retirees, etc. Additionally, studies, such as those developed by psychologist Geert Hofstede (RIP), are sources of information for understanding global changes, cultures, and societal perspectives (for our preparedness and readiness!). If you are not “prepared,” stick with your current approach: active listening and empathy, letting the customer lead the interaction, etc. These aspects will demonstrate a customer-centric approach, persona recognition, and courtesy, as well as get input to improve the customer delivery system. Allow customers to share their stories. I hope it helps.

Etiquette and local preferences certainly matters but in customer service the helping friendly attitude matters most. Understanding client persona , stress level, task priortiy are important and the work flow can vary in individual cases. Active listening, empathy, assurance can make the most difficult client happy even if the case is escalated. Staying positive and proactive adaptability with difficult clients while being careful about personal deficiencies is also important.

Somos personas vendiéndole a personas.
