It all starts in conceptual layout preparation, wherein your approach would be to employ safety in design principles. An attempt is made to balance conflicting demands like ergonomic requirements, maintenance requirement erection requirements are met within available footprint/ area requirement. One should start systematically understanding the process/ product requirement. Understand different types of equipment which will be employed and their maintenance requirement. One should analyze construction of building, equipment challenge. Taking into consideration above requirement we should prepare a conceptual layout which satisfy statutory and safety requirements. Clear path for man , Materials flow etc .

1) Separate high-risk areas (like machinery) from low-risk areas (like offices). Ensure clear pathways for evacuation and accessibility to emergency equipment. 2) Gather input from stakeholders, including safety officers, workers, and management, to identify specific safety priorities. This may include emergency exits, hazardous materials storage, machinery safety, and ergonomic considerations. 3)Create simulations or models of the plant layout to visualize how people and materials will move through the space. This can help identify potential safety conflicts before implementation. 4)Design the layout to be adaptable to future changes. This allows for modifications as new safety priorities emerge or as processes change.

If you ask me about safety and efficiency, both are important in expanding or designing the plant layout. I always prefer safety, but safety is not a choice. Safety is mandated at the same time. I don’t believe that safety will reduce your plant's effectiveness or efficiency; the plant's efficiency will automatically increase with safety practices and design. Nowadays, globally, 6S is promoted, which means that along with 5S, there is one more safety to optimize and improve the efficiency of a process or a plant. So, if you want to increase the efficiency of the factory or plant, you should not compromise your safety, you need to reduce or avoid waste.

One time at work, I was tasked with designing a plant layout where production speed conflicted with worker safety. The production line demanded a fast material flow, but the proximity of machines made it unsafe. To resolve this, I redesigned the layout to create safer walkways and placed safety barriers between fast-moving equipment, balancing speed and safety.

When it comes to conflicting priorities, it's about balancing immediate safety needs with long-term operational efficiency. Isolating areas with higher risk (like chemical storage) from areas with high foot traffic can be a crucial step. Finally, ongoing evaluation and flexibility are key. A plant layout needs regular check-ups to ensure all safety measures remain effective and efficient.
