Aligning your message with the theme depends greatly on the nature of your content and your audience. If you're presenting factual information, a structured, data-driven approach might be best. However, if you’re sharing personal experiences, a more relatable, storytelling style could resonate well. The key is to be flexible, tailoring your tone, style, and examples to connect both with the event's purpose and the audience's expectations.

Storytelling is my favorite way to make sure that whatever keynote I do hits home! It’s even easier to find stories that fit the audience when I have access to people that are in the audience or have done work with the organization in the past. Connecting with the organizers helps, but it’s really awesome when you can connect to individuals that are in that audience they give you a sense of what’s going on in their environment and in their industry so that you can find stories that relate to the most.

Organisers are mined for information by me in advance - current challenges, age and gender demographics, industry or sector issues. I always arrive early take in the space untiI feel that I own it. I chat to attendees over coffee, introduce myself and ask how they want to feel when they leave the event. Sometimes I list these when I talk and ask at the end on a show of hands or applause how they guage me. Use references which they can identify with, address concerns and reference in my stories.I never ask about previous speakers - that to me exudes uncertainty. I use stores a lot

Begin by grasping your audience's expectations and challenges. Speak with organisers to understand their vision and desired takeaways. Weave the event theme naturally into your personal stories, relating your experiences while staying authentic. Your message should enhance rather than overshadow the overall event. If other speakers are presenting, understand their topics to ensure your content builds upon their insights. Create clear bridges between the theme and your expertise. Craft your closing call to action to reinforce event objectives, inspiring specific steps that align with what participants need to achieve.

It is always critical to research the group you are speaking to, understand their business, mission and values then share personal anecdotes and perspectives that connect to them. First of all it makes you more interesting and relevant but it also sends the message that you respected them enough to do the work and learn what makes them tick. Don’t try and repeat them back to them though, just tie it to you and share that.
