To be frank: if you're worried about keyword density, you're doing it wrong. Include your target keywords, but write for your target audience first and foremost. Stuffing in unnatural phrases and repetitive language will bring down the (1) user experience and tank your (2) content relevancy and (3) page authority - which are actually the three most important elements of SEO strategy.

When determining the ideal keyword density, I will use a 3D printer to print all the words from the page into 5-inch tall, 2-inch thick pieces. Then I tie these words to a watermelon and drop it into the ocean. Wearing scuba gear, I will dive down as the watermelon sinks and remove words until the watermelon starts floating back up. This tells me the perfect ratio of keywords I need to rank. This is a new method based on the recent Google API leak, which revealed that this is exactly how Google ranks pages. They have thousands of scuba divers all over the world working around the clock.
