Its important to look at the bigger picture & organisations goals , philosophy while solving any business solution. It is important to look at the different options and take a decision in terms of how it will impact the customers , Business stake holders and then have a solution in place to minimize any drastic impact/ mitigate the risks. Also develop a clear communication strategy & Data available for the management to make sure that the employees and the impacted stake holders are on your side and support the decision.Once the decision is taken , go all out to support it and make the impact a positive one for the organisation's culture and reputation.

When tackling a tough business decision, ensure you've gathered comprehensive data, weighed pros and cons, and sought diverse perspectives. Trust your intuition, but don't rely solely on it. Thinking for ourselves is how we really know what our next step to success is. Asking others questions is how we help others to think for themselves so that they can do the same. When I begin to lead a new team, it fills me with so much joy. It gives me the opportunity to lead more people, help more people, and spread my message even further. There is nothing better than leading a team through a transformation or a change, and seeing them grow throughout the process. My process is to ask the team a lot of open questions, so that I dig deep into their minds and get them thinking deeply. Some of the questions I ask, I already know what they are going to say. However, sometimes I have no idea.

As I look at the listed steps by in this topic, I see a lot of resemblance to the steps we use in ADDIE Instructional Design. Perhaps this is why analysis and problem solving come naturally to me, and why Learning & Development (L&D) departments can coach leaders. If you have a good L&D department, use it as a sounding board for your ideas. A well-run L&D department is a revenue positive partner, not a cost center. To accomplish that it analyzes the business, internalizes its issues, and looks for solutions within the L&D realm. That means as a department L&D has that difficult-to-get data driven and environmental driven gut feeling worth tapping into. Capitalize on it.

I love it when I ask my team a question that I think I know they answer to, and they correct me with either a better answer, or prove that I was completely wrong. It shows me that they are thinking deeply, and differently because they are not expecting me to just give them the answers. If I was to just give them the answers instead of asking the team questions, then the team wouldn’t need to do any thinking, and even if they didn’t agree with my answers, they would not challenge them. Which would tell me that I do not have buy-in from the team.

Using a decision matrix, they weighed factors based on importance, aiding a clear comparison. However, this tool has limits: criteria and scores are subjective, and future uncertainties remain. Despite these, Airbnb's careful assessment led to its success. While using the decision matrix, balance quantitative and qualitative insights for well-rounded decisions.

So, in order to make life easier, I ask the team questions that they need to come up with the answer for. If they come up with the answer, then they have already bought-in. whereas if they are just told what to do, it would be a lot harder for me to get the team’s buy-in. When the team are coming up with the answers and the solutions, everyone is bought-in, and everyone is involved in the decision making process. When you make a decision with your team, and value everyone’s input, the team will feel respected.

After your analysis, proceed to make and communicate your decision. My philosophy on decision-making is based on being both effective and efficient. To make well-informed decisions in business, it is important to gather all the relevant facts and carefully consider the impact of your choices on your goals and team. Involve your team in the decision-making process and seek their input to ensure a clear understanding. Once you have made a decision, communicate it effectively and assess its effectiveness. This approach will create a strong decision-making process for success in both business and life.

Highly effective leaders are always thinking long term. They are “big picture” thinkers. Their long term thinking is focussed on their people, not on the product or service that the organisation provides. Highly effective leaders know that when they are asking their team open questions, and getting them thinking deeply, they are increasing their influence with them. They know this because they are giving influence to their team, which in turn increases their own influence. Give influence to a person, and you will receive influence. Give to receive.

You could “feel” the difference in the team, and I could feel the difference in all of us when we were together. Asking thought provoking, open questions to the team definitely brought us together a lot more, and we were making decisions together. If anything went wrong, I was accountable. When things went right, the team got the credit. That’s how I saw it, and the team felt respected because of it. Leading your team with questions is how you make decisions as a team. When you make decisions as a team, the team feels a lot better. The team are more willing to listen to each other and help each other.

The real answer to this question is… you can’t know for sure that you’ve made the right choice until you get to the other side and measure against your success criteria. There are many things you can do to ensure really solid decision quality, like setting success criteria, considering opinions counter to your own, including your stakeholders in the process, following an agile approach, having a solid risk assessment, etc. But, did you make the right choice? You can’t know that for certainty until you get to the other side.

The flip side of belief is sacrifice. The more you are convinced about your vision or a set of ideals, the more you are willing to sacrifice to facilitate it come to fruition. Taking action in the face of adversity is the leader’s task, but you won’t always know whether the decision was the right one until long after it’s made and that’s OK.

Make decisions as a team. Involving and valuing your team’s thoughts, opinions, ideas and solutions will bring the team a lot closer. You will build trust, strengthen relationships and increase your influence for the good of everyone.

Remember that making the wrong decision and moving forward is still better than making no decision and not moving anywhere at all. If you do end up making the wrong decision, you can always course-correct at a later date, but at least you learned!

Its best to remember that end of the day there is no right or wrong choice! Something what seems right today may seem absolutely wrong another day and vice versa. In business, time matters. Postponing decisions waiting for the right time, right moment, right thoughts may sometimes be more damaging than, what seems then as not such a great decision.

In my case I have had to reflect on the goal, look at the progress, look at existing data and trends and used that to make a decision.
