When it comes to effective leadership whilst dealing with project delays, it is imperative that one flags the problem before it actually becomes a problem and that is how the reassurance is achieved… - Clear RACI matrix to communicate delays - Sign offs from the required stakeholders are in place - Remediation plan is shared as it is being developed and over communication of the revised targets /timelines is important so everyone are aware what the next steps are

Just be upfront about it, don't sugar-coat it and certainly do not try to hide it. Relationships with stakeholders are built on trust, and transparency is key to this; so be open, be honest and be transparent. Along with this, in order to maintain confidence and trust, show them how you are managing the delay, and minimising impact (cost, overall timeline etc.) where you can; and more importantly demonstrating how you are mitigating against any future occurrences/delays of this nature (and others!)

Never be afraid of the truth! I have seen time and time again and earlier in my career fell into the trap a couple of times of thinking that anything other than good news shouldn’t be shared the thing is, if you do that, the information becomes a huge big thing. Instead realize that news is neither good or bad but just news! Let your stakeholders know that news as soon as possible, this is one of the situations where email first is best. Then follow up with face to face, in a group meeting if one is scheduled or put some time in with the stakeholders to go over the delays etc. with them. In the discussion focus on the simple reason for the delay and the solution you have to get back on track as that’s the main thing they all want to know!
