I would go step further - its critical to understand the unstated needs, the question behind the question so that one can customize the approach best. The other key aspect is to stay flexible as you unearth more information through the sales process - avoid force-fitting solutions to client challenges. These are all simple ground rules - yet, we often forget / ignore them in practice.
