Listen. Observe. Learn. Unlearn. Relearn. Apply. Repeat, passionately. To succeed in Marketing, I believe, one must apply the above with humility, grace and emotional intelligence. The rude awakening for me has been the discovery that the technical competence becomes futile if stakeholder management is left ignored. Listening, reading the room and responding right to the room is what separates successful marketers from the rest.

I strongly believe in engaging with the field crew and getting your hands dirty on the playing field. Nothing compares to direct observation of the revenue generation fact on the ground. Observing consumer behaviour, purchase patterns, and salesforce attitude is the reality that reflects the essence of the market and should regulate your vision to build a strong knowledge of the industry to succeed in marketing.

The best way to success is to embrace the discovery phase. The age of instant information can be a blessing and a curse BUT there is NO excuse for NOT following the latest news. I keep a continual PowerPoint deck that is FULL of screen shots with the latest and greatest from white papers, reports, articles and social media posts and then filter it quarterly with a "key findings" recap. You can do this by industry, ad product, growth markets, etc. The best way to succeed in marketing is to be informed and apply your skills to get ahead of the game.

One of the best ways to succeed in marketing is to get as much experience as possible across client, brand, marketing, communications, PR and digital and understand the goals of each and how they support the firm’s strategy. Put yourself forward to support campaigns, projects and various initiatives. That is how you will get a good understanding of what you want to focus on in future years. Also, become familiar with the systems and technology used. Don’t worry about making mistakes, that’s how you learn. And ask plenty of questions.

Manage up and manage sideways. In other words, make sure your boss loves you, and your boss’s boss. Make sure other teams love you. If you do the above, you’re well on your way. Not being facetious. It’s based on data. Being technically excellent and a great boss will only get you so far. In fact, those two things won’t even get you 25% of the way. Manage up. Manage sideways. And Godspeed.

Some ways to get started are: -Taking certified courses that specialize in areas of marketing you are interested in. -Researching the top agencies and what advertising techniques are trending. -Saving ads and marketing campaigns that intrigue you on your feed. Work to figure out what interests you, and take the time to learn why you think it works. Studying consumer patterns (especially your own) can give you basic market insight. -Lastly, be open about where this career journey can take you. No matter how much you plan, this industry can change swiftly, so it is crucial to be adaptable.

Do "free" online advertising certifications by the top advertising platforms i.e. Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok

There are plenty of courses out there, but beware of vendor biases on the courses you choose. Google’s Digital Garage is an excellent way of learning the basics of digital marketing without too much emphasis on using their tools to succeed, for example. But a course created by a SaaS company may well focus on teaching you that success requires their product. Be aware also of the self-proclaimed gurus who will sell you a course without being able to demonstrate strong experience or credentials to back up what they’re telling you. With the advent of ChatGPT, there’s a lot of shoddy material out there. Best to look on sites with solid credentials like Coursera, for example, offering courses from educational institutions.

Webinars are a great way to listen to experts about Marketing but as always be critical of what you consume and don't mindlessly treat all advice as fact.

Right on this platform, there are a plethora of influencers who offer incredibly thoughtful discussions of marketing - one piece of advice I'd give is to be discerning about whose you invest time in though. My advice: Look to creatives if you want to learn about developing content or HOW to tell stories, look to strategists if you want to learn how to structure and talk about brands, and look to media pros ("digital" leads and strategists) if you want to understand how to think about effectiveness and optimization.

You can learn a lot by asking questions, a lot of questions. Never be afraid of asking for advice, never be so arrogant that you are unwilling to be humble enough to know you do not have all the answers. Be open minded to other people's ideas and experiences. Often times these matriarch and patriarch's (OG's) of the marketing world can teach you a lot and help you avoid some of the pitfalls they have fallen into.

I think a good starting point to succeed in marketing and also to learn more about the industry is to explore various areas of marketing and identify your strengths and interests to specialise in. For example, you may want to explore areas such as digital marketing or social media marketing or search engine marketing etc the list goes on. You can do this by attending conferences or workshops or enrolling in an online course. You can also gain practical experience from freelance projects which can provide invaluable hands on experience.

It's important to understand marketing as a "business area". I had a lot of "artist" leaders and a lot of "growth" leaders, but very few "business" leaders. Business leaders were the ones that taught me the most, especially about practice. It takes a lot of time and patience to become very good at business, but it's very important to understand this if you want to make real chance in your company. Experiments can improve performance, practice can make you more patient and testing with your team, focusing on strategic results for your business, can make you a great "business" marketing leader.

The best way to learn is by doing and applying what you learn. It's great to read books, newsletters, blogs, and social posts, but if you're not applying it, it won't stick.

A few things I have found helpful to gain more expertise in marketing : ● Observe everything around you to gain insights. ● Visit places, stores, consumers and try to understand why behaviours are happening the way they are? ● Question status quo - why these problems are not solved, why communication of specific brand is trying to communicate etc. Basically be curious and inquisitive. ● Network and discuss about ideas not people. ● Follow best brands like Coca Cola, Ikea, McDonald's, Apple, Volkswagen & others to understand their case studies. ● Start your own marketing asset, a podcast, a blog, a social page or anything that requires marketing to gain real life feel and challenges to beat. This is pretty much to make you evolve. 🚀

Practice by doing and treat every marketing project as a science project. I learned marketing concepts and terminology in college, but it really clicked for me once I applied what I'd learned to a real project. Presenting work or reports and answering objections is also a challenge because you have to think on your feet. By actually working on a project from start to finish, whether it is for self-promotion or pro bono, you'll be better prepared to present and defend your work and suggest theories for future improvement. You'll see real results, work around real issues, and be able to provide an analysis for what happened, and what could happen better the next time around.

Get good at what you do. Get curious about what you don't (yet). Whatever your current marketing role is, understand the dynamics that drive success in that corner of the world - whether that's web marketing, social media, event marketing, brand management, etc. Get really, undeniably good at what you do through practice and learning from peers. But the best marketers don't let the boundaries of their current role become boundaries of their curiosity. Keep an open mind, learn about adjacent fields and how the pieces fit together (or not!) How does your work fit with sales, product, finance, other marketing disciplines? The best marketers ask lots of questions and are always looking to learn.

Desire. Perseverance. Creativity. Curiosity. And A Sense of Humor. You have to really want to pursue your passion. End of story.

Marketing is generally not an industry, it's a profession. The industry is determined by your employer or that of your clients. To succeed in your career, you need to constantly and continuously develop your hard skills, soft skills, business acumen, and industry knowledge. Be curious. Read! (And by read I mean read quality content, not just the comments on Instagram.) Make it clear to your employer how important professional development is to you. If your employer can't or won't provide you with the learning and development opportunities you need, seek them out for yourself (and seek out an employer that will support your ambitions and career goals). Be opportunistic and learn from every experience.

Be open to the world around you. To new ideas. Don't get too close to your job and brand. Look around. Go to trade fairs, to events organized by your peers or other stakeholders, listen to consumers from other industries' perspectives. Challenge yourself always. I had the chance to start my career in the Mars Group. The first thing you do when you want to make a career in Marketing is start in sales. In the field, close to clients and customers. And then you go back regularly. Also, you learn not to settle for what is safe. Yes, you must deliver measurable results, but you need to save some time & budget to get out of your confort zone and try news things. To fail is ok, even more in marketing: it means you care and are open to innovation.

Work towards being a full stack marketer - that means learning new skills in diverse areas - content, technology, analytics, and creative. Marketing is an ever-evolving field so catch up with trends. Don't be left behind when the world moves from plain old SEO to AI enabled search. Don't forget to observe and follow your competitors - that's one of the ways to differentiate your brand, messaging and value proposition.

Marketing and advertising are very different. As are client-service marketing roles and in-house ones. It's important to know how to write a brief. And product segmentation is key. But as a marketer for over 17 years, the most important foundational element I wish I gained a mastery of early in my career is truly understanding the financial model behind any product or service that I am responsible for marketing--it's what drives the business. Understanding margins, revenue, and COGS will also allow you to clearly articulate attribution for marketing efforts.

Find a mentor! The most valuable marketing lessons I ever learned were from someone who was above me and had been in business a lot longer than I had been. Mentors don’t find you, however. You find them. And you’re very discreet and careful with how you consume their time. Nearly anyone, if you ask, will be happy to give you 30 minutes to answer questions you have carefully crafted. This is your moment of opportunity. If you learned a great deal, you have identified someone who is a potential mentor — particularly amongst people with whom you work. Most people want to reach back with a hand and help move others forward, and very seldom do others ask for that help.

Shop floor, shop floor, shop floor. Any industry’s best kept secrets, insights and keys to success are where the sales and transactions happen.

How do you learn best? This is the key. Figure out what works for you; how you take in information; and what motivates or excites you. For some people they prefer to read and make notes; others like experience or experimentation. Personally I learn by talking to people and then trying things - learning from my mistakes and successes. Try different ways of learning; understand what works; and do more of that. And be ready to understand if there are areas of marketing you’re less likely to be successful at…and try another. The marketing industry is vast. There are so many areas of marketing and different skills needed to be successful. Work out what’s right for you, including what area of the industry you’re drawn to.

The most important aspect of learning about marketing is curiosity. Rather than reading blogs or going to seminars or other external things, engage the experts around you. When I started my career at Target I was ultimately curious. I spoke with people in production, in media buying, events and brand management. The things I learned from them about their practices and their observations and their experiences came with me my entire career. You’ll be surprised if you express interest in someone else and what they do how willing they are to help and to teach. In the process, you’ll learn how all aspects of marketing fit into your ecosystem and contribute individually to your customer profiles.
