While this article is supposed to be incident specific to contingency planning for volcanic eruptions, this model should be used for any risk. Remove the words “volcanic eruptions” and see where it applies to other risks that may impact the ability of your organization to continue its mission in the event of ANY business disruption. Why make it so hard on ourselves when we already have limited resources? Sometimes there’s only one of us leading a business continuity management program. Spend more time practicing your response and recovery activities for a plausible scenario (risk event) with an all hazards plan. Peace out.

This article uses “volcanic disruptions” as the type of incident, which is fine if it is a plausible scenario (i.e., risk) to exercise response and recovery strategies in the plan. Understand that the tasks mentioned can be implemented for all exercises, regardless of the scenario, and adapted based on the exercise objectives. Establish an exercise program based on the crawl, walk, walk a little faster, jog, and run 😊complexity levels, while spending most of the time in the less complex categories. This will aid in increased familiarity with the response and recovery tasks and further resilience. Exercises are training, and response and recovery teams must train together as it is essential in building a healthy culture of preparedness.
