Context is about reality, not wish fulfilment. History can be hidden, especially in places like London, where half the context is beneath your feet. There is geology everywhere, that often dictates what you see above ground. Past climate change events have played a major part in the recent design of buildings in Hythe and Shepperton. Shading from existing structures and natural features plays a greater role than ever, now that buildings aim to be zero carbon. Isso me fez lembrar dos estudos de Jane Jacobs, essa importante relação de cidade e pessoas. É importante que a comunidade local tenha uma forte identidade para prezervar a cultura e necessidades do local, pois, o mercado imobiliário com seus interesses, conseguem mudar até a forma de pensar das pessoas, manipulando de acordo com seus interesses. Além do projeto, a visão do arquiteto se torna importante para reativar as verdadeiras necessidades da comunidade.

As decisões criticas no planejamento urbano geralmente surgem nas comunidades carentes, ilhas de pobreza rodeadas por bairros bem estruturados, eu proponho uma lei estruturada no tríplice hélice urbano onde participem as universidades, iniciativa privada e poder público. O modelo pode ser ampliado para abordar todos os conflitos urbanos, entre outros o reflorestamento urbano ou a impermeabilização do solo.

In many third-world countries, personal interest often takes precedence over the context of urban design. Unfortunately, this can lead to a degradation of historical value when modernity is introduced. This is exemplified by the situation with the Monument of the Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, in Manila. However, architects are now working together to preserve the remaining treasures of Philippine history.

Um arquiteto urbanista pode se posicionar como um facilitador entre o meio e a comunidade, integrando-se ao contexto local para achar soluções sensíveis e funcionais. Isso envolve entender profundamente a história, cultura e infraestrutura do local, além de envolver ativamente a sociedade civil e demais partes interessadas para garantir que as necessidades e desejos locais sejam atendidos. Ao considerar o tecido urbano mais amplo e os padrões de movimento, atividade e crescimento, o arquiteto pode desenvolver projetos que se integrem em equilíbrio com o ambiente existente e que beneficiem a comunidade como um todo.

Importante la comprensión de la ciudad desde todos los aspectos que la componen (no sólo los relacionados directamente con el urbanismo) y la proyección de una visión hacia el futuro. esencial la participación para construir esa comprensión del contexto desde una visión múltiple.

En los proyectos urbanos es fundamental hablar "idiomas", es decir, conocer el lenguaje y los intereses de los distintos actores. En mi experiencia, muchos conflictos surgen porque no hay un conocimiento real de los objetivos de cada agente. Entender la posición, las lineas rojas y el margen de maniobra de cada agente o colectivo es crucial para llegar a propuestas acordadas con capacidad real de llegar a buen fin. Eso exige deshacerse de los prejuicios que cada agente tiene sobre los demás. Muchos problemas se solucionarían si cada parte conociese a las demás. He visto como en muchos casos, los problemas solo son prejuicios sobre lo que unos creen que piensan o quieren los otros.

Porosa a la comunidad. Nada fácil. La participación ciudadana no siempre tiene una mirada global. Mayoritariamente parcial. Llena de intereses particulares. Aprender a informar, a escuchar y a interpretar objetivamente las vivencias que crean barrio, crean comunidad. ¿Actualmente existe comunidad en los barrios de nuestras ciudades?

Stakeholder engagement in my experience in urban design would involve identifying and understanding the perspectives of diverse groups impacted by the project, such as residents, businesses, and governmental bodies, through inclusive participation and transparent communication. Architects foster relationships, empower stakeholders, and resolve conflicts constructively, integrating feedback into the design process to create solutions that reflect community values ,priorities and sometimes even traditions. Continuous engagement ensures ongoing dialogue, accountability, and responsiveness, ultimately leading to more inclusive, sustainable, and successful urban environments that feels like home for the users.

It is important to remember that The Client is always the primary stakeholder, without whom there would be no project. Often the client remains a passive actor in a project, for various reasons. Vested interest, or lobby groups, will by contrast make a lot of noise. They will contribute nothing, financially, creatively, or materially to a project, while frequently being in conflict with one another. Similar problems exist when the client is not a strong individual, but a corporation or public body. The desires of an NHS Trust, Local Authority, or Town Council, will change daily as meetings are held, and post holders change. The designer must not only be politically adept, but also ensure that cut off points are agreed in writing.

Es necesario considerar si hay o no herramientas y cauces ya establecidos para la participación social en la comunidad en la que estamos trabajando. Si no existen, no se puede comenzar de cero. Hay que canalizar la participación a través de las estructuras e implicar a personas relevantes que ya tengan voz reconocida para que actúen como embajadas del proyecto.

O profissional de arquitetura e urbanismo deve trabalhar nesses projetos como um maestro a guiar uma orquestra, sempre buscando a harmonia entre as partes e obtendo a solução menos conflituosa para ambos.

Trata-se em alinhar os interesses políticos, econômicos e sociais. O sucesso do engajamento é o alinhamento no atendimento de todos esses interesses. Considerando o equilíbrio necessário para a viabilidade. Uma proposta objetiva, funcional e clara tende a ser bem engajada.

I also try to do a quick review of the process till now. This gives me an opportunity to recheck the original intent of the project including the financial aspect. Connecting that with stakeholder’s interest gives me the ability to understand the impact that the decision may or may not have. In my opinion, generally UD projects are long term projects which may diversify into multiple projects, eventually leading to loss of original vision. So reviewing and going back to square one can be a good thing.

If you have assessed the context and genuinely engaged with stakeholders, then evaluation of the impact should primarily be a matter of building science. With virtual modelling techniques now available, this is easier than ever before. Buzz words and sound bites can be very dangerous when they conflict with The Brief. You can never integrate public spaces into secure areas, and more places have become 'secure' over the last 50 years. If you design so that pedestrians, vehicles & cyclists all have their own 'safe space', then you quickly end up with no space for enhanced biodiversity, and increased surface water run off.

Firstly, we need to evaluate the entire possible context, and analyze courses of action to avoid wasting time that can be critical in extreme situations. That said, we have a duty to make the most of the original characteristics of the target area, whether natural or socioeconomic.

La peatonalizacion de nuestras ciudades, la integración de la vegetación, la posibilidad de una colaboración ciudadana en las actividades de barrio, desde una mirada ambiental, social y económica, de escucha compartida.... la arquitectura puede ser facilitadora de los actuales retos.

O impacto sendo bom ou ruim, faz parte da mudança. Há cidades que não tem espaço para implantação de ciclovias em suas vias existentes, ou condições de manter a manutenção de elementos urbanísticos instalados para a população, mas é importante que seja feito, dentro do possível, como forma de iniciar a mudança necessária a longo prazo.

Ao avaliar o impacto potencial de suas decisões de projeto, um arquiteto urbanista pode influenciar os ecossistemas locais considerando o uso cuidadoso de materiais sustentáveis, a preservação e ampliação de áreas verdes e a implementação de soluções de projeto que promovam a biodiversidade urbana. Em relação à coesão comunitária, projetos que privilegiam espaços públicos acessíveis e incentivam a inclusão social podem fortalecer os laços entre os moradores e criar um senso de pertencimento. Quanto ao equilíbrio econômico urbano, a criação de ambientes urbanos mais sustentáveis e atrativos pode impulsionar o desenvolvimento econômico local, gerando oportunidades de emprego, investimento e crescimento de negócios.

Concordo pois uma visão apurada dos fatos e uma certa experiência fará com que problemas futuros sejam evitados ou mitigados.

As melhores soluções são descobertas com as melhores perguntas, para tal se faz necessário conhecer exatamente as problemáticas, pontos de conflito e demais situações desconfortáveis ou críticas. Com base em todos os dados e conhecimento da região, se faz necessário o envolvimento de outros profissionais para complementar na tomada de decisão.

Para uma avaliação completa e eficaz, é essencial envolver todas as partes interessadas, incluindo a comunidade local, especialistas em diversas áreas e órgãos reguladores. A realização de estudos de impacto ambiental (EIA), audiências públicas e consultas com a população afetada são práticas recomendadas para garantir que todos os aspectos críticos sejam considerados e que medidas mitigadoras sejam planejadas e implementadas. Essa abordagem holística não só ajuda a identificar e gerenciar riscos, mas também a promover um desenvolvimento urbano mais equilibrado e sustentável.

Innovation requires collaboration, usually with manufacturers. Imagining that you can innovate in isolation is usually proof of insanity. To design for the future it is important to understand why things were done in the past. Traditional buildings and spaces in the British Isles were created to deal with strong winds and high rainfall (a maritime climate). Regional variations in detailing reflect differences in rainfall intensity and windspeed. Paving over squares in London that were traditionally gardens, even with permeable paving, creates a drainage problem. Copying a building designed for the South of France, or even Norfolk, and placing it in Wales or Scotland, is a recipe for disaster.

A veces la innovación consiste en dar un paso atrás, despejar camino y favorecer la innovación de participantes de otros campos de la vida urbana.

La economía circular transforma nuestra mirada. No hay nada para siempre. Todo esta en continua transformación. Flexibilidad de usos, flexibilidad funcional, flexibilidad en la desconstruccion (parcial, o porque no, global).

O arquiteto pode adotar várias estratégias para planejar a flexibilidade, que inclui o uso de plantas livres e estruturas modulares que podem ser facilmente reconfiguradas ou expandidas conforme necessário. Veo importante recordarme siempre que hoy sabemos que la forma no sigue a la función de una forma estricta, y mucho menos en el diseño urbano.

En los proyectos complejos que implican muchos agentes y plazos muy largos, es importante identificar correctamente los objetivos, diferenciándolos de las propuestas concretas. Así, si durante el proceso surgen inconvenientes que impiden desarrollar el proyecto tal y como se diseñó, será más fácil adaptarlo manteniendo el cumplimiento de los objetivos a los cuales el proyecto daba solución. A veces nos enamoramos de una propuesta proyectual, cuando lo realmente importante es dar respuesta a los problemas que la sociedad demanda, teniendo en cuenta el contexto, los tiempos y los medios.

No designer can predict the future. The flexible, deep plan, office spaces of the 1960's were quickly identified as sick buildings, primarily due to low ceilings. By contrast, mills and dockland warehouses built for a single purpose in the 18th or 19th centuries, have shown themselves to be infinitely convertible. One reason the latter have been converted, and many of the former demolished, is simply down to the quality of the design. That takes you back to Stakeholder Involvement. How you repurpose urban spaces is all important: the UK now faces major problems because many former transport infrastructure routes have been built upon.

Inovar, planejar e flexibilizar a infraestrutura em geral para futuras obras, que possam ser auto-sustentável e proteja o meio ambiente

Urban design has been around for centuries and much of it has to do with looking back and learning from things that were done better, largely because cities grew at a slower pace. When urban design tries to be too progressive it usually fails. To copy the past stylistically leads to equally disappointing outcomes. It will always be a discipline of creative trade-offs where the best outcomes are those that seem to have always been there in a non-flashy way.

As cidades são organismos vivos, nascem e crescem, ficam doentes e precisam do remédio correto para as doenças urbanas. O arquiteto é o médico das cidades, mas nem sempre o doente segue a receita e daí vem os efeitos colaterais e até a morte! Cidades podem estar morrendo. São Paulo no Brasil é uma megalópole e está na UTI respirando por aparelhos, por incuria dos políticos que só pensam na próxima eleição. O arquiteto não pode salvar um morto.

In today's data-driven era, it is theoretically possible to find optimal and balanced solutions in fields such as architecture, urban design, urban planning, environmental planning, and economic development. As a result, most disciplines may need to be rethought in the future, with philosophy and art potentially being the exceptions.

When facing critical decisions or as a major part of the design process, in urban design and architecture, all of the above steps are necessary and fruitful. What is missing here is an overall attention to human factor. All critical decisions in architecture and urban design must focus on a crucial factor which is the human condition. The central project of architecture and urban design must be human health, happiness, and wellbeing. Meaning that the success of all the other six steps, above, can be measured against their impact on human health and wellbeing. Great architectural and urban environment are those which inspire, engage, activate and move us emotionally and literally. Be more inspired!
